Homeless Man Burned To Death During Ice Storm

Police found a homeless man dead this morning, and they believe he burned to death while trying to keep himself warm during the ice storm. Nassau police say that they found the man, who hasn't been identified yet, behind a kosher food market at a strip mall in Long Island. And it seems that it was a fatal combination of cleanliness and cooking fuel that did him in. more ›

Why This Ice Storm Is Not Shattering Our Will to Live

Why This Ice Storm Is Not Shattering Our Will to Live

You couldn't ask for a better morning if you've been eager to try out those new ice skates you got for Christmas, or if you're feeling litigious and willing to take a spill outside a fancy building. Seriously, it's hip-breakin' weather out there—the sidewalks are covered by treacherous sheets of ice, and it's raining, and why even bother anymore? we're going to get through this trifling little ice storm, because we're hardcore New Yorkers with ice in our veins. Pro tip: If you've got good boots, you're better off walking in the crusty snow at the edge of the sidewalk, so you can actually get some traction. Just take it slow, and send your best ice storm photos to photos@gothamist.com or tag them "gothamist" on Flickr. more ›

The Ice Storm Cometh, Cancels 1,300 NYC Flights

The Ice Storm is coming! And not the kind that involves key parties. The ice hasn't even hit the ground yet and it's already canceled 1,300 flights from New York City's three major airports, according to FoxNY. The National Weather Service is forecasting a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain, and they've got us under an ice storm warning until tomorrow at 6 p.m. Driving is not recommended during this time, and forecasters warn that ice accumulations could knock down some tree limbs and power lines, which could affect mass transit... or worse. more ›

A Hint of Winter

A Hint of Winter

The cause of yesterday's storm, a stacked low pressure system over Quebec, will continue to bring breezy conditions to the city today. Winds around 20 mph and temperatures in the mid 40s means wind chills in the 20s and 30s. A line of showers may drop a bit of rain across the city this afternoon. The breeze will begin to calm down tomorrow as a high pressure system displaces the Canadian storm. Expect a sunny, slightly less windy high around 50 degrees on Thursday. Great weather for parading and trick-or-treating is in store for Halloween. Clear skies and a high around 60 are likely, and Friday evening won't be nearly as cold as earlier in the week. more ›
