The Boss' Plaque Is Monstrously Huge

On Monday night, a plaque in honor of longtime owner George Steinbrenner was unveiled at Yankee Stadium's Monument Field. And the immediate consensus was that it's really big. At seven feet by five feet, the Boss' tribute looms over the monuments to, oh, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other legendary Yankees. While one Gothamist commenter said, "Hideous -- looks like something they would have done on Seinfeld!" there's a method to this madness. more ›

Man Sues Bank of America for "1,784 Billion, Trillion Dollars"

A disgruntled New Yorker is suing the Bank of America for "1,784 billion, trillion dollars." It gets weirder: The suit, filed by Dalton Chiscolm last month, is being reviewed by the same federal judge who sentenced Bernard Madoff to a 150-year prison sentence. Judge Denny Chin has called the lawsuit "incomprehensible" and demanded that Chiscolm explain his claims, and elaborate on charges that he received "inconsistent information from a 'Spanish womn" reached by phone at the bank. more ›

Times Square Brightens Up With 17-Story Walgreen Sign

Drab and dreary old Times Square is finally going to get some razzle dazzle starting tonight when a massive 17,000-square-foot, three-sided diagonal LED sign is turned on at 1 Times Square, right where the New Year's ball drops. Designed by D3 LED to promote the Walgreen's flagship location—not to mention other publicity-deprived corporations like Kraft, Johnson & Johnson, and Colgate—the "spectacular" display runs off almost 30 computers and uses 12 million energy efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Within the sign are 13 big plasma screens displaying "coordinated, dynamic content." You are powerless to resist! more ›

Spider-Man Musical Budget Swings Up to $40 Million!

Broadway insiders say Julie Taymor is out of control on the set—er, rehearsal studio—of the upcoming musical adaptation of Spider-Man. The projected budget has soared to $40 million so far, with sources telling the Posts's Michael Riedel, "She doesn't care what it costs. Does not care at all. Her attitude is: It's for the art, and you don't question artists." To be sure, with music by U2's Bono and the Edge and direction from the Tony-winning Taymor, Spider-Man could easily be the most fabulous piece of, um, art on Broadway since Capeman. But Riedel predicts that with a weekly running cost of $1 million, the show would "have to run about 8,000 years" to break even. Producers are supposedly eying the big Hilton Theatre for a 2009 opening—they just need the current occupant, Young Frankenstein, to admit defeat. more ›
