Ex-NYPD Commish Won't Be Charged For Hitting Pregnant Lady With SUV

After former police commissioner Howard Safir backed his SUV into a pregnant lady on the Upper East Side, it was initially reported that he would not face charges. However, Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance's spokesperson said it would investigate the matter, because "traffic accidents involving pedestrians or cyclists are a serious concern in Manhattan." Well, now, nearly a month later, Vance's office is closing the book on the matter, telling the Times, "Our office conducted a further factual inquiry as we often do. Update: No Charges For Ex-NYPD Commish Who Hit Pregnant Woman

Update below: Former Police Commissioner Howard Safir will not be charged for backing his Cadillac Escalade into a pregnant woman in the Upper East Side and then driving away, the Post reports. The Giuliani-era NYPD head struck Joanne Valarezo, who is seven months pregnant, on Third Avenue between East 80th and East 81st streets on Friday. more ›

Ex-NYPD Commish Hits Pregnant Lady With SUV

According to the NY Times, former police commissioner commissioner Howard Safir, who served under Rudy Giuliani between 1996 and 2000, "backed his sport utility vehicle into a pregnant woman on the Upper East Side on Friday afternoon and then drove away." Fortunately, the woman, who is seven months pregnant, "was not knocked down and was not seriously injured in the accident." And police, who were able to track Safir down because the woman took down his Escalade's license plate, "determined there is no criminality." more ›

Number of NYC Gun Owners Decrease

In a city whose mayor has made gun control one of his signature issues, it's no surprise that the number of registered gun owners has gone down. The Post reports that there are now 36,169, versus 38,000 last year. Permits that allow one to wear a gun on a holster (concealed) also dropped to 2,555, which the Sun says is almost 50% less than the 2004 number.
