New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) has added a section to its web site where residents can see how city hospitals stack up against each other and against state and national benchmarks. HHC operates 11 hospitals and four long-term care facilities in the city. The Associated Press reports that information available to healthcare consumers at the HHC site includes data like mortality rates, adherence to "best practices" treatments, rates of pneumonia and infections developed while under care, and the rate of pressure ulcers and falls while in long-term care.

After the NY Times reported the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene wanted to encourage adult men at risk for HIV/AIDS to get circumcised, Mayor Bloomberg distanced himself a bit from such a program. According to today's NY Times, Bloomberg officials "cautioned that [a campaign to promote circumcision] was still in its infancy and not yet something the administration had decided to pursue."

"The smoking rate for Chinese men in New York City is as high as 36%, substantially higher than overall smoking rates for men in New York City," said Nhu L.Tran, MD, Director of Smoking Cessation Services at Gouverneur Healthcare Services. Their goal is a smoke-free Chinatown, but I think most Chinese looking at the billboard above will be more frightened of ghosts than of the danger of cigarettes. That baby does not look happy, but neither would we if we were being held by a specter.
