Sports Illustrated announced today that it has named Yankees Captain and sometime Post Cover-Model Derek Jeter its Sportsman of the Year. Remarkably, Jeter, 35, is the first Yankee to be given the honor since it was first handed out starting in 1956. Sports Illustrated Group Editor Terry McDonell gushed about Jeter's leadership abilities on and off the field: "Derek Jeter has always presented himself with class; he does numerous good works for the community with his Turn 2 Foundation, which is one of the most efficient, effective foundations of its kind; and he's extremely generous with not just his money but with his time, which in many cases is more valuable.
