It took three days, but CNN has succumbed to pressure and suspended commentator Roland Martin after his arguably homophobic Super Bowl tweets about David Beckham's H&M ad. Somehow we don't think this spat is over just yet?
CNN Suspends Roland Martin Over Homophobic Beckham Tweet
CNN's Roland Martin Finds Beckham Homoerotic, GLAAD Mad
Though we found last night's Super Bowl ads pretty tame, at least one of them has managed to cause a bit of controversy. Damn you, David Beckham for causing heterosexual men to question their sexuality! Because of Mr. Posh Spice's H&M ad, GLAAD is now calling on CNN to fire commentator Roland Martin.
Tyler Clementi's Roommate Rejects Plea Deal
Dharun Ravi, who was charged with invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and numerous other counts after his Rutgers University roommate Tyler Clementi killed himself, refused to take a plea deal today. Ravi's lawyer said, “Simple answer, simple principle. He’s innocent. He’s not guilty. That’s why he rejected the plea.”
Archbishop Dolan: Gays Threatening To Sue Church Over Marriage Denials
Archbishop Dolan has no made no secret of the fact that he does not approve of marriage equality—but now, as JoeMyGod points out, he appears to just be scaremongering on the topic. In a long interview with Salt Lake City's Deseret News, Dolan claims that priests across New York are being threatened with lawsuits for not allowing gay marriages—even though the church's right to do so was one of the sticking points that almost held up marriage equality in New York in the first place.
Chick-fil-A Gave Millions More To Anti-Gay Groups
People really dig the grub at Chick-fil-A but you know what the folks who run Chick-fil-A (or at least its charitable arm) don't dig? The gays. Not exactly surprising considering the chain's religious ties, but the amount of money it gives to homophobic groups should raise a few eyebrows. It had previously been discovered that the chain gave more than $1.1 million to anti-LGBT groups between 2003 and 2008, but now it turns out that in 2009, the most recent year in which the company's IRS 990 forms are available [PDF], it gave nearly two million more. Still craving that Chick-fil-A Deluxe Chicken sandwich?
Hell's Kitchen Battles Boxers, A Gay Bar That Would Open Near Schools
Hundreds of people packed a Community Board 4 meeting in Hell's Kitchen last night to debate Boxers, the popular Chelsea gay sports bar that wants to open on 10th Avenue near 52nd Street. That's just down the block from Public School 111, and many parents are concerned about its proximity to their children—because of the "alcohol exposure," not because it's a gay bar, of course. All that firm, rippling gayness has nothing to do with it! Please let area resident Nivia Cefello, who has lived in Hell's Kitchen for 65 years, explain:
Starbucks Slammed Over Gay Bias Allegation, Queens Dairy Dismissal
Starbucks is in hot coffee today for two reasons: an allegation that a manager at a Long Island Starbucks berated a gay worker for his sexual orientation, and news that the chain's milk distributor plans to drop Jamaica, Queens-based Elmhurst Dairy and go with a non-union dairy conglomerate in Texas. The bias allegation stems from an incident witnessed by a customer at a Starbucks in Centereach, Long Island overheard a female manager allegedly forcing an employee, Jeffrey Warren, to resign because he is gay. In a blog post that has since gone viral and attracted widespread media attention, the witness writes:
Sean Avery Kinda Gets Canadian TV Sports Host Fired
Rangers left wing Sean Avery may be a nitwit. He may also be a horrible ex-boyfriend. But Avery stands up for what he believes in, as shown by his support for gay marriage in New York. The Human Rights Campaign released a public service announcement from the controversial player last week, prompting sport industry figures to praise and criticize him, notably sports agent Todd Reynolds chiding on Twitter, "Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender "marriage". Legal or not, it will always be wrong." Now, a Canadian TV host has found himself without a job after saying on Twitter, "I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage."
Tyler Clementi Case: Molly Wei Accepted Into Pre-Trial Intervention Program
Molly Wei, one of the former Rutgers University first year students accused of invasion of privacy for watching Tyler Clementi's same-sex encounter online that later led to Clementi killing himself, was accepted into a pre-trial intervention program that might eventually lead all charges against being dismissed. However, the Star-Ledger points out, "One of the conditions of the agreement, however, will require Wei to testify against her co-defendant," Dharun Ravi, who was Clementi's roommate.
Kobe Bryant Now Dedicated To Ridding World Of Gay Slurs
The Kobe Bryant Apology Tour continued yesterday, after the N.B.A. star was fined $100,000 for mouthing an obscene homophobic slur at a referee earlier this week. Bryant made a public apology Wednesday, and also personally called the president of the Human Rights Campaign to apologize some more. But Bryant, who has some experience with handling bad PR, took a more forceful stance today, and vowed to eradicate the word from the english language: "It's about getting that message out there man, to kill that word. Just don't use it, just don't use it. And hopefully others can learn from the situation that occured and just knock that word out completely," he said on the Dan Patrick Show.
Kobe Bryant Fined $100,000 By NBA For Gay Slur
Thirteen-time NBA All-Star Kobe Bryant was handed a hefty fine of $100,000 by the NBA after he was caught on camera mouthing an obscene homophobic slur at a referee this week. Bryant was given a technical foul midway through the Lakers-Spurs game on Tuesday night, and could be seen on camera angrily yelling at ref Bennie Adams; he seems to have called him a “f**king f****t.” Watch the video below:
Discussing Rise In Gay Attacks, Quinn Faults Paladino
With a series of anti-gay hate crimes being reported in recent weeks, the Daily News reports that City Council Christine Quinn held an "emergency meeting" to discuss the issue—and she found one man who was at least partly responsible: Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino. She said, "Some candidates have spoken out - Mr. Paladino - in ways that are extremely offensive, extremely dangerous and it is hard to separate those statements from what is happening on the streets all throughout our city."
Suspect In Anti-Gay Attacks Makes Bail, 11th Suspect Arrested
One of the suspects in the brutal attacks on three men—allegedly prompted by their sexuality—made bail as another one was arrested. In the meantime, the alleged gang leader said in a jailhouse interview, "I don't have anything against homosexuals. I'm not a monster," and argued he couldn't be involved, since he recently got out of jail.
Paladino Denies "Dysfunctional Homosexual" Remark
Yesterday, "mad-as-hell" Carl Paladino continued his controversial streak by telling an audience of Orthodox Jewish leaders in Brooklyn, "I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don't want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexualtiy is an equally valid and successful option--it isn't." This morning, on Good Morning America, the Republican candidate with the Tea Party following explained, "I think my comments were directed at just the confusion that people have had over this issue. I wanted to clearly distinguish that my feelings about homosexuality were no different than those of the Catholic Church. I’m a Catholic. 7.5 million Catholics in the state of New York. I wanted to make it clear what my position was and I think I clearly defined it." Hey, isn't "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" one of the Ten Commandments?
8th Suspect In Bronx Anti-Gay Attacks Arrested, 9th Sought
Yesterday, the police announced that the eighth suspect in the brutal anti-gay attacks in the Bronx was arrested and released a photograph of the ninth and final suspect, Ruddy Vargas-Perez. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said during a press conference, "The seven individuals that we have in custody initially, there’s an eighth one now, have made statements, video confessions or statements concerning their acts involving this case, but I wouldn’t characterize it as remorse." In fact, the suspects, accused of harrowing acts of torture, are reportedly claiming they were intimidated into participating!
Stonewall Attack Suspect: "My Sister's A Full-Blown Lesbian"
One of the two Staten Island men charged with assault as a hate crime for beating a gay man in the bathroom of the Stonewall Inn spoke to the Daily News to insist that he's no homophobe. Matthew Francis claims he had no idea he was in the bar that is considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. Plus, "My sister's a full-blown lesbian... I don't discriminate against gay people."
Two SI Men Accused Of Anti-Gay Beating At Stonewall Inn

According to the Post, the suspects asked a man in the bar's bathroom if he was gay—which he confirmed—and, after asking for money, punched him, with one saying, "We don't like gay bars, and we don't piss next to f---ts."
Brooklyn 1, Westboro Hate Freaks 0
The five people from the Westboro "Baptist" "Church" who picketed Brooklyn Tech yesterday were drowned out more by the hundreds of Tech students, counterprotesters, and Brooklynites chanting "We Love Jews" and shouting "Go Home" to the freaks from Topeka, who were outnumbered more than forty to one. The Times' Fort Greene blog noted that "many if not most" of the counterprotesters were students who had organized by "word of mouth and Facebook status." You do need something to do in Health class.
Hate-Freaks to Brooklyn: Bring It On
The kooky Kansas "church" famed for its God-hates-fags message will be harassing Brooklyn Tech after school today and three synagogues on Saturday. Their spokeswoman, Shirley Phelps-Roper, also issued a contemptuous put-down of Brooklyn— asked whether she feared violent confrontations at the picketing locations, she replied: “Don’t flatter yourself, Brooklyn. We serve the living God. You mess with us, you’ll get double destruction for what you do.”
Anti-Gay Kansas "Christians" To Picket Park Slope Synagogue
The Brooklyn Paper reports that members of the Westboro Baptist Church — famous for their "God Hates Fags" and "Thank God For 9/11" signs — will be in Park Slope this Saturday to harass the Sabbath services at Congregation Beth Elohim. This isn't their first time in NYC— they visited the West Village earlier this year. The synagogue is being targeted as part of a concerted effort to begin protesting Jewish organizations for such sins as tolerance of homosexuality and of course, killing Jesus.
Homophobia During Rangers Home Games
Gay NY Rangers fans are unhappy about the "toxic atmosphere" at Madison Square Garden during Rangers games. One of their examples is the reaction to Larry Goodman's dancing (pay attention at about 19 seconds in):
