Yesterday, the college student who took a photograph of a man who groped her on the downtown 4/5/6 platform at Union Square spoke out about her ordeal, telling the Post that after his brazen attack, she followed him onto a 6 train, “I ran up to him. I kicked him in the face. I was just punching him." But in interviews with local news stations, Shyane DeJesus, revealed that no one paid attention to her when she went after the perv, "I yelled out on the train, ‘He groped me on the train! Watch out for this man,’” but the 10 other people on the train "just blocked out the whole situation. They wouldn't come to help."
Subway Groping Victim Says Passengers Ignored Her Cries Of "He Groped Me!"
Hollaback's Emily May Talks About Stopping Street Harassment
Ever walked down the street to the hoots and catcalls of total strangers? Ever been privy to a total stranger's nasty bits on the subway? There is a way to stop it. Hollaback is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology. It started in Brooklyn six years ago, and has since spread to dozens of other cities around the world. They just launched a new "I've Got Your Back" campaign, a mobile app to empower bystanders who want to intervene in street harassment. We spoke to executive director Emily May about her mission to make the streets safer.
Street Harassment Finally Gets City Council's Attention
A substantial crowd comprised of all genders, ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, and ages gathered today at the first City Council hearing on street harassment. Armed with suggestions on how the city can combat the problem, one expert said, "Street harassment is a form of sexual terrorism" and an activist called it a "gateway crime, creating a culture in our city that makes other forms of violence against women okay."
Police: Woman Kills Man Who Harassed Her, Escapes On F Train
Last night, at the 21st Street Queensbridge F station in Queens, police say that a woman who was being harassed and followed by a group of men ultimately fatally stabbed one of the men before escaping on an F train. An MTA employee who saw the men told the Daily News, "Seven or eight of them were chasing the woman."
Police Look For Suspected G Train Subway Perv
The police have released an image of a man accused of exposing and fondling himself to a young woman. According to the Daily News, "The sicko sat across from the teen on a Queens-bound G train at the Woodhaven Blvd. station in Elmhurst on Nov. 7 at about 3a.m., cops said. He allegedly stared at the victim and pleasured himself. The woman bolted from the train when the doors opened and boarded a Brooklyn-bound train out of the station, police said." The suspect is "described as a 5-foot-11 black male between 30 and 40 years old. He was last seen wearing a white jacket, dark pants and a blue stocking hat with white trim." Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: Call 1-800-577-TIPS, text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
Seen: Another Suspected Subway Pervert
No, it's not deja vu—it is another grainy photograph of a man suspected of pleasuring himself on the subway! According to the police, "On July 30, a man, believed to be in his late teens to early 20s, began masturbating on a southbound D train at the 36th Street subway station around 6 a.m. before fleeing at the 9th Avenue station"—he apparently sat next to the woman who later took his photo—"Around 12:40, the same man stole a cell phone from a commuter on a northbound F train and fled at the 18th Avenue subway station." The police urge people with information to call Crime Stoppers (800-577-TIPS), go to the Crime Stoppers website or text 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. Last week's accused subway perv admitted his business was in the open, but "explained", "My private parts fell out. I looked down and it was out, it just popped out. I was trying to put it back."
Accused Subway Perv: "My Private Parts Fell Out"
After his picture was released by the police on Wednesday, the 3 train's suspected subway masturbator was arrested yesterday—by two cops who recognized him from the wanted posters. And guess how Kevin Bishop, 34, who has 64 prior arrests explained his actions? According to the court documents, he admitted to the police, "That's me in the pictures, my private parts fell out. I looked down and it was out, it just popped out. I was trying to put it back... I deeply apologize for what happened. I do admit the whole truth." He is being held on $1,500 bail. Administrative assistant Celeana White had taken a cellphone photograph, which detectives say is one of the best ever (quality-wise, we guess) cellphone pictures given to them. As for White's claim that a cop told her a subway flashing wasn't a police matter and suggested she call 311 instead, the Post reports the cop "admitted she told the woman to call 311, but insists she really meant to say 911" (according to Post sources).
Seen: Subway Masturbator On Uptown 3 Train
The police have released a photograph of a man who was allegedly masturbating on an uptown 3 train last week. A 41-year-old woman took a cellphone picture of the man she claims was pleasuring himself in front of her. The man got on the train at 42nd Street/Times Square at 3:45 p.m. and then got out at the 96th Street stop. And 1010WINS adds, "The woman says she tried to lodge a complaint at the 32nd Precinct and provide police there with the suspect's photograph but was apparently rebuffed by an officer who, according to the complainant, told her it was not a police matter and to report it through 311." The police urge people with information to call Crime Stoppers (800-577-TIPS), go to the Crime Stoppers website or text 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. And Internal Affairs is looking into the "not a police matter" part.
