A billboard on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway between Meeker Ave. and Metropolitan Ave. has collapsed and fallen onto the highway and street below. The billboard fell 200 feet, and is blocking off traffic on the BQE. The National Weather Service had issued a Wind Advisory for the tristate region this morning, with winds hitting up to 45 MPH. We'll update as we learn more information.
Giant Billboard Crashes Down On BQE Near Metropolitan Ave. In Williamsburg
The BQE Will Continue To Suck Pretty Much Forever
Bad news for anyone who commutes on four wheels, ever tries to get out of the city, or lives remotely near the highway: the BQE and the Gowanus expressway won't be getting better anytime soon. The city has just killed plans to revamp and repair major chunks of both expressways, citing, unsurprisingly, a lack of cash.
Complaints: Toll Booth Collectors are Obscene and Disgruntled!
Toll collectors on the New Jersey Turnpike were the subject of 550 letters of complaint in 2008 and 2009, including one from a woman who was told she'd have to be cuffed and strip searched after getting in the wrong lane and another driver who was told to "get on the road and die" by an attendant after attempting to pay his toll with a $20. Numerous collectors allegedly preferred a silent attack: spitting on their fingers before handing back change.
Prank 911 Call Caused Controversial Jersey Police Stop
Remember those students from Queens who were returning from a college visit when they were pulled over, searched, and cuffed by New Jersey state police officers—sparking allegations of racial profiling and excessive force? Cops denied that the students' skin color had anything to do with the Jersey Turnpike traffic stop, insisting that they only pulled over the van because they received a 911 call warning them that van passengers were carrying guns. Well, it turns out one of the students in the van made that 911 call, according to officials.
Man Hit And Killed By Two Cars On Grand Central Parkway
A 32-year-old man died on Saturday when he was struck by two cars on the Grand Central Parkway near the Jewel Avenue exit in Flushing, according to the Daily News. The victim — whose name has not yet been released — was struck at around 4:40 am by a 2002 Buick. "I was driving along...then all of a sudden I had a bump on the car," one of the drivers told the tabloid. "And I thought, 'Oh, my God! That looked looked like a body.'" Moments later, the victim was run over by a 2002 Dodge. "I thought it was a mannequin," said the driver of the Dodge. "[He] was already...on the ground when I hit him. What could I do?" Both of the drivers remained at the scene and were not charged.
Goats Wander Onto N.E. Thruway
Perhaps taking a cue from the chicken that was on the loose in Queens, today's weird report over the police wires is that two goats are on the New England Thruway. More specifically, they are on the southbound NE Thruway at the split to the Hutchinson Parkway—there's a highway unit "trying to herd them off the road." Pressing question: Was there a third goat involved and were they looking for a bridge with a troll under it? And last year, a pygmy goat escaped a slaughterhouse and was wandering the Bronx before being taken to Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY.
Fatal Accident on Route 78 in NJ
A couple hours ago, a number of vehicles, including a tractor trailer and a dump truck, were involved in an accident on Route 78 in Union, NJ. WCBS 2 reports, "It appears the dump truck may have been traveling westbound and crossed over into the eastbound lanes, slamming head-on into at least two other vehicles and overturning. A tractor trailer traveling eastbound also crashed apparently after swerving out of the path of the dump truck." So far, two people are confirmed dead—and the NJ.com says they were in passenger vehicles.
Hit & Run on Entire Family
A family walking along the side of the road in Queens was struck by a car that witnesses claimed was doing 90 m.p.h. After plowing into the family, which included an infant, the driver continued on, perhaps neglecting to notice the baby that was hurled into the air and a the male friend of the mother who was killed.
