City Might Launch ESPN-Style High School Sports Channel

The Department of Education wants to monetize high school athletics by creating a television network just for city school sports. Officials might sell the broadcasting rights for the Public Schools Athletic League and use the sponsorship money to add new school sports like table tennis and flag rugby, according to the Post. Supporters say similar deals have proven profitable elsewhere in the country and have given student-athletes greater exposure, benefited schools, and allowed parents and alums who can't attend games to stay involved. Stuyvesant High School is known for many things - high SAT scores, award winning students, and admission to elite universities. Football is certainly not of of those things. A new documentary, The Peglegs of Stuyvesant High, airing tonight at 6:30 pm on CSTV, focuses on the 2006 Stuyvesant Peglegs (named after Peter Stuyvesant, who had a wooden leg). We usually hear these stories about suburban soccer matches and hockey games, but after Sunday's CHSAA boy's basketball intersectional championship at Fordham, things got a little heated between Larry Davis Jr. and Michael Bennett, one of the games referees. Davis, who fouled out of the game, allegedly yelled at Bennett and his uncle actually punched the referee in the jaw! For his part, Davis has been suspended from school pending investigation and the rest of the CHSAA's season, which includes a state semifinal game.
