Much has been written about Death & Company since they came on the East Village scene a few months back. As you likely know by now, high-end cocktail people take their craft quite seriously and Phil, the head bartender here is no exception. Made with an array of well-selected spirits, juices, alternative liquid sweeteners and homemade bitters, each cocktail strives for a chilly, complex, and balanced flavor profile. Many of the drinks offered are not just trendy throwback drinks, but classic old ones refashioned and developed around the desire to showcase a particularly interesting class of spirit and/or producer. Get ready to try some Old Overholt Rye, an artisanal Mezcal, or some old-fashioned-new-kid-on-the-block Plymouth Gin surrounded in a glass by like-minded flavor neighbors. Look at this comment from when Gothamist last wrote about this spot, owner of small mescal producer Del Maguey is thrilled to learn that his product is being showcased. There is a real mutual appreciation here between the owners, customers, the bartenders and spirit makers.

+ This endless Stephen Colbert painting is pretty amusing-- unless the Stephen Colbert madness has already ended, in which case it's just sad.

Today's City section offers an depressing, if also interesting and unsettling, glimpse into a New York world that we normally don't see: the six feet by six feet hotel rooms in which Chinese men (there are others for women) can stay as they move among restaurant jobs across the country. Specifically at the residents of the Sun Bright Hotel on Hester Street and the Bowery after a stabbing there.

King Size is not that big- that's the first thing you need to know. But, like the graffitied chihuahua on the wall of the sunken back room, there is more to it than its size. Second, south of Hester Street, it's further down Essex than we thought- past The East Side Company one block-that's why we were late to meet a friend there for drinks on a recent weeknight. We slide onto a comfy barstool and were able to still take advantage of the 2-for-1 happy hour (4-8pm) with two specialty vodka cocktails. The first, huckleberry-infused vodka and lime, straight up ($10) was light, tart and refreshing. The second, muddled black cherries, vanilla vodka, a splash of Coke and mint, served on ice was more innovative but reminded us, in both color and presentation, of a mojito. We'd reccomend the cocktail to die-hard vodka fans but are waiting for the mojitos Danny Milan, the bartender and co-owner, promised are coming with the summer sun. Both drinks we tried are still looking for their names, so knock back a couple and get creative, the staff is taking suggestions.
