Yesterday, regular and auxiliary police officers were present to pay their respects during the Manhattan funeral of auxiliary police officer Nicholas Pekearo, who was killed during a Greenwich Village rampage. Pekearo, a 28-year-old who had worked at an Upper East Side bookstore, recently written a novel and thought about joining the NYPD one day, was remembered fondly by friends and colleagues (it turned out Pekearo had shaved his head to support a fellow auxiliary officer who was going through chemotherapy). Mayor Bloomberg said during the eulogy:

He was our native son. New York was in his soul. It was in his quick, kinetic style of speech and in a sense of humor that was at the same time humble and ironic, sarcastic and self-deprecating... He grew from a little boy to a man in the same apartment on Morton Street. He learned his ABCs at PS 3 on Grove Street and graduated from Bayard Rustin High School, on West 18th Street.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told mourners, "He came face to face with evil and conquered it. And today, his sacrifice redeems us all."

Tomorrow is Election Day! There are many big elections this year, so if you haven't thought about how you're voting, we highly recommend Gotham Gazette's Guide For The Last Minute Voter, 2006 General Election to understand the candidates and issues. Many races seem like runaways (Governor, Senate), but the State Comptroller race is in play, as are some Congressional races; you may also be able to vote for State Assembly races. And there are also civil and supreme court judge elections - the guide links to the state Bar Association's voter's guide.

After a cruise-control regular season, the Mets have hit a speed bump before the playoffs start. The health of their pitching staff has downgraded from bad to worse. After they learned Pedro Martinez would miss the postseason -- and half of next season -- with a torn muscle in his calf and a torn rotator cuff, the Mets got more bad news Tuesday when Orlando Hernandez pulled his calf during a workout. The Mets now hand the game 1 ball over to 25 year-old John Maine, who has played in only 27 Major League games and has no playoff starts. Maine was 6-5 with a 3.60 ERA in his 16 starts this season. Hernandez, in comparison, is 9-2 with a 2.64 ERA in his 14 postseason starts.

Back in July, it was announced that professional lacrosse had come to NYC and that the team would need a new name. So, the new name was announced: The New York Titans. And, boy, does that sounds good...for Tennessee! Now, the Tennessee Titans don't have a deathlock on the word Titan, but how unoriginal was the NY Empire Lacrosse management to choose a write-in name like that? At least "Tennessee Titans" has alliteration. Anyway, NY Titans president George Daniel said, "The overwhelming choice of the fans is Titans. The image of New York is one of power. The name Titans captures that." Whatever - it's still lame.

As delays snarled Laguardia, JFK, and Newark with news that British authorities had stopped a terrorist plot to blow up airliners flying the U.S., New York City's security level remained at "elevated" - which is where it's been since September 11, 2001. Governor Pataki increased state police, Port Authority police, and National Guard presence at the airports, and said, "I want to assure all New Yorkers that we have and will continue to provide a heightened level of security, and I urge all of you to be vigilant, but to go about your normal routines. I encourage all citizens to remain alert with regard to the threat of terrorism. The eyes and ears of the public are one of the most important resources we have to help law enforcement officials deter and prevent acts of terrorism." Mayor Bloomberg noted that since the threat was focused on airports, subway security wouldn't have to be raised. And did you know that Senator Schumer is stuck at Heathrow?

After stumbling through the non-conference season, St. John's finally picked up a victory it can be proud of when the Red Storm defeated Louisville at the Garden Tuesday night. Louisville may have been worn out from battling a tough Pitt team this past weekend, but St. John's still deserves plenty of credit for taking down the 17th-ranked team in the country. The Red Storm still figure to struggle in Big East play this year, but they didn't struggle Tuesday night.
