The helicopter that crashed into the East River last week, killing one and seriously injuring four others, was inspected just two days before the incident. According to a report released by the National Transportation Safety Board, the 1976 Bell Jet Ranger had its annual inspection on October 2. The AP adds, "During an annual inspection mechanics take much of an aircraft apart and put it together again. The work can take several weeks."
Fatal East River Crash Helicopter Was Inspected Two Days Before Tragedy
Bloomberg Tells Helicopter Haters To Go Cry To The FAA
The tourist helicopters that are giving one Brooklyn Heights resident Vietnam flashbacks and other Brooklyn Heights residents Grand Canyon vacation flashbacks are here to stay, says Mayor Bloomberg. Local politicians have been pressuring Bloomberg to ban tourist flights from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, which is opposite Brooklyn Heights, but yesterday a mayoral spokesman shot them all down.
Chris Christie Takes State Helicopter To Son's Baseball Game
Yesterday, a group of Republican businessmen from Iowa came all the way to New Jersey to beg Chris Christie to run for president. After two and a half hours, Christie reportedly refused, and excused himself so that he could attend his son's baseball game. But instead of taking a car like any other frugal, straight-talking Republican, he took a helicopter, like a lobbyist. Or a guy who said "I know I can win" in 2012. Christie's spokesman told reporters that "The governor's use of the helicopter was completely appropriate and within allowable guidelines. He uses the helicopter very sparingly." Presumably to pick up dry cleaning, prune trees on his property, and do wicked "air donuts."
Tourist Helicopters Turning Brooklyn Into 'Nam, Man
We thought we had it bad in DC, when the president's personal chauffeurs flew over us every 15 minutes, but Brooklyn pols are painting a noisier picture of their borough in a renewed push to ban all tourist helicopters. According to the Brooklyn Paper, Brooklyn Heights senator Daniel Squadron told a crowd on Sunday that "Enough is enough! We need to stop the endless parade of tourist helicopter flights over our neighborhoods." Another Heights resident called the neighborhood a "war zone," with Vietnam vet Duncan McGonagle echoing the sentiment: "I'm having flashbacks because it sounds exactly like being back in Vietnam again."
Red Hook Residents Suffer Aerial Aural Assault
With Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO residents managing to (sort of) push the loud choppers out of their sky, the Red Hook folk are now suffering the brunt of helicopter traffic—and according to the Brooklyn Paper, they don't like loud noises either! The city has allegedly allowed the air traffic to move over to the coast of Red Hook, in an effort to avoid them flying over Governors Island (you know, which is pretty much vacant).
Helicopters Taking Away Brooklyn's "Zen-Like Connection" To East River
Last year, after much protest, new regulations were put into effect regarding helicopters flying over Brooklyn. The move was meant to eliminate 30% of sightseeing helicopters, which most often will fly over DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights, and low-flying choppers... which cause brain damage to locals (maybe). Now the Daily News reports that the new regulations weren't good enough (or sightseeing choppers aren't following them), and the war rages on—this time with the Brooklyn Bridge Park architect declaring that the flights are "marring his gleaming waterfront creation." Oh, Brooklyn.
Chopper Ban Over Brooklyn
After much protest, and some claiming their sound can cause brain damage, the helicopter nightmare over Brooklyn may be coming to an end. According to the Brooklyn Paper the city instituted a no-fly zone over the entire borough today. The move will eliminate 30% of sightseeing helicopters, that often fly over for aerial views of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights, as well as ban them from flying below 1,500 feet. There will be no short tours allowed, and no sightseeing over Brooklyn or the Brooklyn Bridge.
Can The Choppers Over Brooklyn Cause Brain Damage?
Park Slopers had their chance to complain about plane noise over their neighborhood, and now Brooklyn Heights locals are expressing their concerns about that incessant helicopter noise overhead. The tourist choppers that are sonically torturing them are all coming from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, and the Brooklyn Paper is fueling the fire by reporting that the noise could cause brain damage.
Heads Up: Choppers Over The Hudson Today
From NotifyNYC: "There is a military exercise occurring this afternoon over the Hudson River. Expect low flying helicopters."
Hollywood Helicopters Fly Above Manhattan Today
No one panic! The helicopters Hollywood sent in last week are back in the Manhattan airspace today. ABC alerts that "between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., there will be movie filming in New York City. As a result, there will be low-flying helicopters over Manhattan. The helicopters will be in the vicinity of the Empire State building, Chrysler Building and Central Park by the reservoir." UPDATE: The copters today are for a commercial. That's one big budget commercial!
