The 19-year-old son of the 63-year-old LaGuardia High School English teacher who was brutally beaten to death yesterday has been charged in her murder. Henry Wachtel suffers from seizures, and was reportedly having one when he started hitting her. Friends told NY1 that Kay was worried Wachtel was becoming angrier; neighbor Leigh Miller said she could hear them fighting often: "It's been a very volatile relationship since he was a young, young boy, and she would scream and yell and say terrible things. Furniture would be flying, and it was just a very sad situation."

Earlier today, around 9:30 a.m., police responded to a 911 call at 300 West 55th Street, where they found a 63-year-old woman on the floor with severe head trauma. Karyn Kay, a LaGuardia High School English teacher and Pratt Institute visiting instructor, was taken to Cornell Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A neighbor said, "The doorman shared with me they had just taken the son out in handcuffs because he had beaten his mother up very, very badly."
Off-Duty NYPD Officer Killed In Long Island Car Crash
An off-duty NYPD officer was killed in a messy car crash in Long Island early this morning. The officer, whose name has not been released to the public yet, and another man were apparently speeding in a black 1994 Honda Accord on Carmen Ave. in Westbury around 2 a.m. this morning. They lost control of the car while passing another car, jumped a curb, and wrapped around a tree. The officer was trapped in the mangled wreckage of the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Columbia Student Run Down, Killed While Fleeing Muggers
A 24-year-old Columbia University student studying late at the library Friday evening is in critical condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan after his bid to escape a pair of muggers ended in serious injury under the wheels of a Jeep. According to WABC News, the student had just left the library on Columbia's Morningside Heights campus and was waiting for a bus around 9 p.m., when he was approached by two young men. It's unclear whether the student was mugged or already mugged, when he fled into the street near 120th and Broadway.
