Jets Putting Rex in Effect as Head Coach

The next head coach of the Jets will be Rex Ryan, who will step down from his current post as the coordinator of the well-respected Baltimore Ravens defense. The Jets are reported to have made an offer almost immediately following the Ravens' loss to Pittsburgh in last night's AFC Championship. ESPN says that the terms are almost identical to the four-year, $11.5 million deal signed over the weekend by former Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to become the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

Jets Look to Another Current Playoff Coach Rex Ryan

The only issue that feels more drawn out than the Senate replacement around the Big Apple these days is who will succeed Eric Mangini as the next coach of the Jets. The latest contender is Rex Ryan, current defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, fresh off the team's Divisional Playoff victory yesterday in Tennessee. Jets owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum are heading to Baltimore to interview him. Ryan is the son of former head coach Buddy Ryan, mastermind of the legendary Eagles defenses in the early '90s. One fan of his is the quarterback Ryan's defense picked apart last weekend, former Jet Chad Pennington. He told the Star-Ledger, "Rex has a unique scheme and Baltimore has very unique players...He maximizes their talent." One of those unique players, Ray Lewis, recently told the press, "Coaching-wise, Rex is one thing, but as a man, when you try to talk to him, he's just like a father."

After wishes of Bill Cowher becoming the Jets next head coach went nowhere in a hurry, word is now that the team has passed on other longtime veterans Marty Schottenheimer and Mike Shanahan, both lingering around the coaching bread lines. That leaves all eyes pointed on Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is scheduled to interview with the team today. Spagnuolo is one of a handful of candidates without head coaching experience being talked about with other mentions of current Jets Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Boston College Head Coach Jeff Jagodzinski, but clearly the man behind the Giants "D" leads the pack. Both the Post and the News make cases for him today, one noting that the Giants value him so much that they're currently paying him a higher salary than Eric Mangini was picking up and the other noting how successful other former Giants defensive heads have done as head coaches with the list including Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and Panthers Head Coach John Fox. Meanwhile, the ousted Mangini appears to be frontrunner as the new head coach in Cleveland.

Last week, the Jets warmed up for their road game against the Vikings by showing up on Sesame Street. Head Coach Eric Mangini has a son who loves the show. Chad Pennington, Laveranues Coles and, most interestlingly, Australian punter Ben Graham all shared the Queens sound stage with Elmo. The Jets make their only Monday Night Football appearance -- and will probably get higher ratings than the Seasame Street episode -- when they face the Dolphins in Miami on Christmas Day.

When Travis Taylor hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass 2 minutes and 7 seconds into Sunday's game between the Jets and the Vikings, the New York sideline couldn't have been pleased. A week after being burned on big plays against the Bills, the Jets had blitzed, but the gamble hadn't paid off. The Vikings took advantage of single coverage and struck quickly at home. But that was the Jets' low point, and after the 26-13 beating they put on the Vikings, they might have trouble remembering it.

If the Jets didn't have to worry about this week's game, they could feel sorry for themselves and ask each other why they couldn't be fortunate enough to play in the NFC instead of the AFC. But the Jets play in the tougher of the two conferences, and mediocre teams don't make the playoffs in the AFC. After last week's disappointing -- and one-sided -- loss to Buffalo, the Jets look like just that, a team that's respectable but, in early January, probably will not have a playoff game or a good draft pick. Instead, the Jets could fall back on how close they came. But they're not ready for that either.

With no time to celebrate last week's upset over the Patriots, the Jets took the field Sunday against the NFC's best and spun their wheels. Their defense held the Bears' offense in check, but an impotent offense and questionable coaching decisions cost the Jets a shot at defending their home turf. At 5-5, the Jets are once again at .500. Looking for good news? Their schedule only gets easier from here.

- In what shouldn't be the most shocking news in the football world, the Jets have named Chad Pennington their starter for the regular season. Until he suffers another shoulder injury, that is. Head Coach Eric Mangini cited Pennington's progress this pre-season as well as his presence, ability and leadership. As the newly anointed starter, Pennington gets rewarded by sitting out the Jets' last pre-season game against the Eagles this Friday.

“This is a great day for the New York Knicks and our fans. Larry Brown is not just one of the best coaches in the NBA today, but in its history. He has made every team he has ever coached a winner, with a legendary approach to teaching and motivating his players. His value to us as a franchise at this time is immeasurable.”

It's a shame that the college football season has come to an end, and worse still that the Orange Bowl was such a dud. Gothamist's final rankings of the 2004 season:

Martin had one of the most impressive games in recent memory, rushing for 196 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries and adding a touchdown reception to lead the Jets to a season-opening 31-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in East Rutherford. Box Score.

Much of the off-season talk among Jets fans, politicians and residents of the West Side of Manhattan has centered on one thing the proposed $1.4 billion New York Sports and Convention Center. While Cablevision (the parent company of Madison Square Garden) has led a high-budget campaign for public opinion, while the team has recently started its counterstrike with legend Joe Namath extolling the potential of the project, of which the city would cover $600 million (and team owner Woody Johnson paying the remaining $800 million). Mayor Bloomberg and company are pushing for the project heavily, ostensibly as a boon to the citys hopes of landing the 2012 Olympic Summer Games.
