Is it legal to sell a haunted home in New York without telling the buyer about the ghosts? It's sort of unclear, but most states require sellers to fill out a form disclosing what they know about the property. According to Mental Floss this is "a relatively recent reverse of the older 'buyer beware' norm in real estate and lets buyers know ahead of time of any major problems with their dream home." But not everyone is disclosing when it comes to ghosts. For example, there was a famous case that went all the way to the State Supreme Court, after a couple found out they purchased a haunted mansion in Nyack, NY.
Do You Have The Right To Know If Your New Home Is Haunted?
Get Your Spook On: Halloween 2010 in NYC
When you were a child, Halloween meant lying awake at night on the 30th hoping no one copied your "Bag of Jelly Bellys" costume, then eating candy till you had a vision of your guardian spirit. Now the stakes are significantly higher; for adults, Halloween means wearing slutty and pop-culture relevant costumes, getting wasted, breaking shit, putting on five pounds or so from all that infernal office candy, and coming down with the flu from all aforementioned activities, just in time for Thanksgiving. To that end, we’ve compiled a list of haunted houses, corn mazes, dance parties and other events to get you in the spoooooky spirit. Click through the gallery for details, and be sure to send photos of your own haunted adventures to photos@gothamist.com!
A Peek Inside Purgatorio, Times Square's Adults-Only Haunted Club
Purgatorio, the new multi-level erotic haunted house from the people behind exclusive raunch den The Box, is open for business for just a few more days, disappearing permanently into oblivion after Halloween. We've already shown you the necrophilia promo video, but here's a closer look at some of what your $39.99 will get you. A couple weeks ago we were all set to attend the opening party hosted by Perez Hilton, but at the last minute we couldn't make it up to Times Square. Family emergency. NOT because we were scared... of just about everything in that last sentence.
Video: Purgatorio Will Make The Box Look Like The 21 Club
Necrophilia's so hot right now. We're all super-stoked for the city's best pervy haunted nightclub—brought to you from the people behind the pervy disturbing nightclub The Box—to open October 15th, so check out this arguably SFW video to get a taste of what awaits you within this "erotic nightmare fantasyland created especially for Halloween season."
Urban Haunted Houses Emerge
Halloween is right around the corner, and while everyone's getting their best Sarah Palin costume together, others are adorning their houses with creepy crawlers and such. NYMag takes a look at one UES residence that AMNY recently posted some shots of, saying the haunted townhouse belongs to independent financial adviser Richard Medley, his wife, and teenage kids. The tradition has been going on for four years, and they say they get mixed reactions from neighbors (some people don't even like apartment doors being decorated). Have you seen any decked out Halloween houses this season? Send us a photo at tips(AT)gothamist(DOT)com. We're sure there's some good stuff popping up in Greenpoint.
A Look Inside "The Box"
Last night, Microsoft Zune threw another launch party to celebrate the release of the portable mp3 player (Gothamist reviewed the device earlier this week). The location was secret up until yesterday morning, but once it was announced, we got a whole lot more interested in checking the party out. Why? It was also the official opening of the brand new LES venue, The Box. We were supercurious to see what this place was gonna be like, so we headed down last night to scout out the scene.
Customized Haunted House
Halloween is just arond the corner, and a new haunted house has been developed to fit your fears! The creators of Haunted House NYC polled people in each borough about their top 13 fears, and each haunted house in each borough was developed differently based on that poll.
The Voice On the City's Spooky Side
The Village Voice's 2005 Best of New York has much fodder for thought (heavy emphasis on its readers' 'hoods - below 14th Street or in Brooklyn), but we are loving the essays which touch upon "Spooky New York": From one about what happens at the end of subways lines to a look at the one-block streets (the picturesque and gated - Washington Mews - to pee-intense - Weehawken), from insane new buildings (they do scare) to the bouroughs' piers. Each essay inspires us to explore and re-explore neighborhoods. More essays: The small islands besides Manhattan and Staten; free places to sleep; little beaches; and the ghosttowns within the city.
