Whoa: A NYC Transit worker who was walking home in Harlem was attacked by a group of four men. One stabbed him, but 5 train conductor Maurice Parks managed to pull out his own knife and retaliate, stabbing one 28-year-old in the chest and a 22-year-old in the stomach.

An off-duty police officer turned himself in for Sunday's fatal road rage-related shooting in Harlem. Sean Sawyer, who joined the NYPD and worked as an undercover officer, approached a police cruiser yesterday morning, "I think you guys are looking for me for the shooting last night on the FDR [Drive]...This is the gun I used...I thought the guy was armed - make a sign like a gun. I think I'm having a heart attack; please get an ambulance."

A 25-year-old driver was shot and killed at First Avenue and East 117th Street. Police believe that Jayson Tirado and the driver of an SUV got into an argument when an accident on the FDR (a motorcyclist hit a light pole after trying to switch lanes and died) prompted them to exit onto the streets.

In addition, police discovered the body of a woman in her 30s on the floor of her Suffolk St. apartment in Manhattan's Lower East Side last night around 3 a.m. Neighbors called the police complaining of a foul odor coming from the woman's apartment.

A 72-year-old woman crossing West 139th between 5th and Lenox Avenues was fatally hit by a motorcycle last night around 8:15PM. Carrie Moulton, described as a retired Board of Education administrator, was thrown to the ground. Her skull was cracked and she died at Harlem Hospital.

An illegal restaurant may have been the cause of a gas leak that caused a Manhattan apartment building to explode, injuring 20 people late yesterday afternoon. Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said a gas leak caused a flash fire that blew out the walls of several apartments in the 20-unit building. Five people suffered serious burns and one firefighter was injured by falling debris while on the scene. Another firefighter was also hurt. Four of the burn victims were children. Investigators are uncertain of the source of the leak, but neighbors said one of the apartments housed an unlicensed takeout restaurant that served taxi drivers in the neighborhood.

It's hard enough when a loved one passes away, but reading a story from last week's Village Voice about abuses at a funeral home is absolutely horrifying. The story is one of mutilated, decaying, stolen bodies, as well as lost ashes. The Voice found that Riverton Funeral Home in Harlem had an ugly, ugly history. Riverton opened in 1957 near Harlem Hospital and was eventually shut down (it changed its name to Riverton Funeral Home II) in 2006. Before it closed, Riverton lost or settled several lawsuits by grieving families, but none of the plaintiffs have been paid any damages.

Yesterday, an out-of-control car crashed into a crowded Popeye's Fried Chicken restaurant at Frederick Douglas Boulevard and 145th Street. Police say that the driver had a leg cramp, which made he "stomp on the gas pedal."

A frisking turned fatal last night in Harlem. Plainclothes police officer Robert Tejada and three other officers were investigating reports of a man with a gun at Cafe 22 on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard, near 136th Street. The NYPD says the officers identified themselves and searched a man. When Tejada was patting him down and found a gun, the suspect took out the gun and shot the cop twice, once in the ankle and once grazing Tejada's stomach.

DJ Carl Blaze, who was shot 13 times earlier this month (on December 7th), passed away this morning at Harlem Hospital. The popular deejay for New York's Power 105.1 was expected to live if he could survive the initial days after the shooting.

Carlos Rivera, also known as Power 105's DJ Blaze, was shot 13 times early yesterday morning at an apartment building in Inwood. A neighbor who heard the gunfire found Rivera in the lobby of 578 Academy Street. It's unclear why he was shot, but a diamond-and-gold chain that says "CB," worth $20,000, was missing. Rivera is in critical condition at Harlem Hospital.

A woman was charged with murder after killing her husband. Police say Donna Cobb repeatedly hit him with a large ceramic elephant during an apparent struggle. The police also found a knife on the scene but the 38 year old only admitted to beating him. From the Daily News:

Cobb told police her husband, Kevin Cobb, 39, was hopped up on pot and alcohol after the couple hosted a Gameboy party at their apartment on St. Nicholas Place.

Last night, a teenager and the police exchanged gunfire, and an innocent bystander was grazed by one of the bullets. The police had been resopnding to reports of an armed youth in Harlem, and when they asked the 16 year old to drop his weapon, he shot at them. So the police returned his fire, and 50 year old Denise Williams was hit. The Post says the teen had "just left a party for a slain Bloods gang member." Williams is recuperating at a Harlem Hospital; police are still looking to the shooter and will see whose bullets hit Williams.

It's getting a little easier to be green these days. There are ten new greenmarkets opening around the city, spreading around the summer bounty of fresh produce. One of the city's goals in creating the new markets is to make seasonal produce more accessible to low-income city residents. To this end, many of the greenmarkets will take senior coupons, WIC coupons, and EBT cards. The new Greenmarket locations, hours of operation and opening dates are as follows:

One man who witnessed the accident told the TImes, "Some kids were trying to beat him," and leading people to believe that Hehman ran into the intersection of 125th and Park to avoid his attackers. Hehman is in critical condition at Harlem Hospital, with a fractured skull and a broken leg.
