Twitter Data Says New York Is Always Cranky
For the past three years, researchers from Harvard and Northeastern have been monitoring Twitter, sorting 300 million updates by location and attitude to create a cartogram of the country's moods. And it turns out that no matter what time of day it is, Twittering New Yorkers are always in a bad mood. An animated map (below) shows the number of Twitter updates through an average week, with states increasing in size based on the proportional number of updates in the area. They also change color based on happiness levels. New York tends to stay a nice Burnt Sienna, with a brief spike to Mustard in the mornings.
New Study Says New Yorkers Are Miserable!
The Center for Disease Control, of all people, says that New Yorkers are the unhappiest people in the entire country... with New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan and Indiana rounding out the Top 5. On the other side of the spectrum, Hawaii, Louisiana, Colorado, Florida and Tennessee are filled with the happiest folks. All in all 1.3 million people were surveyed over the course of four years, and the least miserable were those residing in states that do well in quality-of-life studies.
Is Sad Panda... Happy?
Who doesn't need some good news on a rainy day? It's been a while since we've checked up on Wall Street's unofficial mascot, Sad Panda, and guess what we found out when we did? He was happy one sunny day back in May! You know what this means, Sad Panda probably just has Seasonal Affected Disorder like the rest of us. Maybe he's really just S.A.D. Panda.
