This week, a Brooklyn teenager was arrested and charged with killing her little brothers' pet hamster; it turned out that there was a whole messy family backstory to it, including at least one other hamster homicide. But now, Monique Smith, who was facing up to two years in prison, has had the charges dropped against her, after family members recanted their accounts. Even so, in a jailhouse interview with the News earlier today, she didn't sound like she had much love for hamsters: "If I saw a hamster in this filthy place, I'd kill it. I didn't kill that hamster, but I'd kill one right now because that's what I'm in here for - a b------t rodent." more ›

Hamster, Sock Monkey Thief Nabbed On Staten Island

The police have arrested one of the fiends involved in the dastardly thefts of computers, video game consoles, a sock monkey and a pet hamster named Star from a Staten Island school for autistic children has bee arrested. The Advance reports, "Emil Sorensen, 21, of Elm Park, is accused of being the lookout in the crime, which was carried out on a weekend... Police say he admitted his role and copped to selling some of the stolen goods — a Nintendo Wii, a laptop and jewelry." Unfortunately, "Star’s fate is unclear." more ›

Autistic Students Still Shaken Up About Hamster Heist

Students at a Staten Island school for autistic children are still upset about a weekend burglary that left them missing computers, video game consoles, a sock monkey, and a beloved pet hamster. The perp took the classroom pet—named Star—and the stuffed animal—named Skippy—as well as about $5,000 of electronics. Someone has already donated a new hamster to the Eden II School for Children with Autism, and police are investigating the break-in. Executive director Joanne Gerenser told the Daily News the perp is "really pathetic," noting: "When you're stealing games and toys, you're stealing from the kids." One of the students at the school reportedly told Gerenser: "I miss the sock puppet." more ›

The rodent in question, named "Mr. Squiggles," belongs to the Zhu Zhu Pets brand and allegedly contains a high level of the chemical antimony, which the GoodGuide reports "may be linked to cancer, lung, and heart problems." more ›

Like clockwork, stores hyped up their Black Friday/Doorbuster sales and potential shoppers waited outside for hours, in hopes of getting great deals. A crowd was waiting outside a Jersey City Best Buy; one person told WCBS 2, "There's a lot of people on this line for laptops, like HP laptops for $197. Normally it's $500 or $600," with another possibly bragging that he "was here yesterday since 12 o'clock in the afternoon"—as in noon on Thanksgiving. more ›
