Windy Weather To Start The Work Week

Windy Weather To Start The Work Week

Remember that junior high science about nature abhorring a vacuum? Well, that abhorrence is giving us a windy day today. A fairly strong low pressure system is hanging out over northern Maine at the same time a high pressure system is moving toward New York. As the high and low get closer the the wind will blow faster to even out the pressure differences between the two. This afternoon will see the wind blowing at a good 20-25 mph with the occasional gust to 40 mph. High winds, low humidity and plenty of dry underbrush will again make conditions favorable for the rapid spread of brush fires like this one in New Jersey. more ›

Wickedly Windy Wednesday

Wickedly Windy Wednesday

Today's weather is all about the wind. As a cool air mass heads into the area following last night's frontal passage we are going to see sustained winds of 20-25 miles an hour this afternoon with gusts to around 40 mph. The wind alone is not quite as bad as yesterday, when a wind gust topped out at 53 mph at JFK and over 60 mph along the Connecticut coast, but today is going to be 15-20 degrees colder than yesterday. It's 44 degrees in Central Park as we write this and the mercury is going nowhere but down today. Look for it to be in the upper 30s by early evening. more ›

The rain should end by early afternoon as this tropical/non-tropical mutt of a storm moves northward. Gusty east winds will keep today's high under 70 degrees. more ›

Batten Down the Hatches

Batten Down the Hatches

Aye, mateys, a strong wind is going to blow. We love days like today when something actually happens in weatherland. What's happening is a cold front tearing across the Northeast this morning. There was a line of storms ahead of the front earlier this morning but they appear to have dissipated. As we type the front is near the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It should pass through town by 11 a.m. more ›
