Yesterday, the funeral of 13-year-old Kevin Miller was held in a Jamaica church, a week after he was hit by a stray bullet from gang gunfire. Queens DA Richard Brown also announced that a second suspected Crips gang member was arrested for Miller's murder, "This case is another example of the mindless gun-related violence and street gang mentality that turns our streets into battlefields and too often takes innocent lives and recklessly endangers public safety."

87-Year-Old Fatally Shot In Coney Island Crossfire

An elderly woman taking a walk outside her building was killed by a stray bullet yesterday afternoon in Brooklyn. Witnesses tell WCBS 2 that they saw 87-year-old Anna Surman "feeding cats in the courtyard at Surfside Gardens, where two of the buildings house seniors." The Daily News reports that Surman was hit around 4:50 p.m: "'Me shot, me shot. Someone shot me,' Surman screamed, recalled Neyla Andreyeva, 71, a neighbor. Bleeding heavily from a wound to her neck, Surman collapsed on the concrete and was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where she died a short time later." Residents are upset with the growing violence, with one telling the NY1, "Another day out here I guess. There's been several shootings happening for the past week, three days out of the week. It's happened like almost everyday," while a community activist told WCBS 2, "We don't understand all the nonsense that is going on with the guns, but it really needs to come to a close." The police, who will be reviewing surveillance footage, seek two gunmen who were spotted fleeing the area.

The NYPD announced a 19-year-old and two 16-year-olds were arrested in the shooting of two people, including a 5-year-old girl who had been walking with her parents, on Monday night. The incident took place on a residential street in the Ridgewood section of Queens. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "The so-called Blood members were coming down the street and the Trinitario group was sitting on the stoop. And this was some sort of gang encounter. Shots were fired. And, as I say, we hope to make more arrests on this matter." Newsday reports when the girl's father saw one man draw a machete, the family tried to run for cover, and the little girl was hit in the back. A 28-year-old man, believed to be involved in the dispute, was shot in the leg. Neighbors tell NY1 there's been a lot of gang violence in the neighborhood.

A 5-year-old girl was shot in the back as she was trying to flee gunfire in the Ridgewood section of Queens, at Seneca Avenue and Stanhope Street. The child, who was apparently sitting outside when an argument broke out, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. A neighbor told the Daily News, "They hit this innocent little girl. These are gangbangers firing at each other like animals." The Post reports reports that it's not clear whether the girl was "hit by a low-caliber bullet or a pullet gun"; plus, witnesses saw men wearing gang colors. A second person, a 27-year-old man, was hit in the leg and was questioned by the police.

Two children are recovering from gunshot wounds after being hit by stray bullets during separate incidents Saturday night. On President Street in Crown Heights, 10-year-old Denia Kearse (pictured) was enjoying a block party when shots rang out around 8 p.m. Her aunt tells channel 7, "Everybody heard pop, pop, pop, and it sounded like it was blocks away. And then, the next thing you know, my niece is bleeding." The stray bullet tore across her chest, chipping her collar bone, and passed dangerously close to her neck. According to the Daily News, she's in Kings County Hospital and expected to recover. Later that night in Far Rockaway, an 8-year-old boy was grazed in the head by a stray bullet as he got out of a car with his aunt around 10:30 p.m. The unidentified victim is in critical condition, and police are still looking for suspects in both shootings.

A 20-year-old was killed while a 13-year-old was wounded during a shooting in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. People heard gunfire outside of 730 East 165th Street around 11:30 p.m.; a man told WCBS 2, "I'm on my way home and I hear a boom, boom, boom. It's not a common thing, but we're used to being careful." When police arrived, they found the two people shot. The 20-year-old was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene while the 13-year-old is in stable condition, with shots in the arm and thigh. No arrests have been made yet.

2008_08_shotsfired.jpgThe home of an acting Supreme Court Justice currently hearing domestic violence cases was hit by gunfire early yesterday morning. Bullets hit the dining room wall and an upstairs bedroom wall at Justice Fernando Camacho's Springfield Gardens house. He and his family were in Montauk at the time of the shooting; they actually sold the house but were awaiting bank approval of the buyers. The police are investigating whether the gunfire was meant for the judge or perhaps his neighbor, who was in a dispute with someone else. Camacho was previously a Manhattan prosecutor who, per the NY Times, helped bring down "such notorious gangs as the Jheri Curls, from Washington Heights, and the Wild Cowboys."

After midnight, a shooting outside 41 West 129th Street wounded four people. According to WABC 7, a group of four people had "walked up to...the victims, who were in front of the building--and opened fire." A man is in serious but stable condition while two men and one women are in stable condition. WNBC reports, "Officers said they are having a hard time gathering information because the victims won't reveal details about the crime."

The NY Times looks at NYPD firearms use between 1996 and 2006, finding that though cops are using their guns less these days, "when they do fire, even at an armed suspect, there is often no one returning fire at the officers. Officers hit their targets roughly 34 percent of the time."

While an 11-year-old boy remain in critical condition after being shot in the face, Suffolk Country police believe his father was the real target. Newsday reports that Jeffrey Langhorn's father had apparently "fought with" a group of men "before one of them fired three shots."
