The Grey Lady is paying a return visit to Peter Luger Steak House in tomorrow's dining section. This New York institution was last reviewed by Ruth Reichl, who awarded it a hefty three stars, proclaiming it "the best steak in New York City." Her description of the Luger experience is almost pornographic:

You know the steak is great before you even taste it. You know it from the fine, funky, mineral aroma that wafts across the table and announces that this is a piece of meat. When the waiter appears with the platter, he stands there spooning a mixture of butter and meat juices across the sizzling porterhouse in an exercise of pure theater. He is merely prolonging the moment, allowing the aroma to revive all your primal instincts as he stretches out the time until you can actually sink your teeth into the flesh. Finally he serves, slowly doling out slices of fillet and sirloin. As your mouth closes on the incredibly tender piece of beef, aroma and flavor come together, exploding on the palate.

Has it stayed three-star worthy since 1995, over a full decade ago? Tune in tomorrow, and we'll see what Mr. Bruni has to say. We're curious - how many stars do you think Peter Luger should get?

In our never-ending quest to explore this fine metropolis that we call home we've found ourselves doing many odd things at odd hours. And yet the Times manages today to point out something we've yet to try: bat-watching in Prospect Park. And honestly, we're a little let down with ourselves for missing this one. We've definitely noticed bats fluttering around before, but for whatever reason we'd never really thought much about seeking them out.

They say that history repeats itself, but this is re-dunk-u-lous. Moynihan Station, the long-planned Penn Station expansion into the Farley Post Office that is intended to make up for the destruction of the late, great, original Penn Station (above) hasn't even been built yet but developers are already vying to build a new Madison Square Garden on top of and around it. And yes, this would be MSG number 5 for those of you keeping count at home.

Now that the election is over we can get down the the business of the "Next Big Building Thing." Luckily, we already know what it is going to be: Governors Island. The News has written about it. So has the Post. So it comes as no surprise that today the Times would have a nice piece on the Island. What is surprising though is just how sweet that piece is. Where the tabloids focused on the upcoming developer wars that Dan Doctroff is going to orchestrate, the Grey Lady looks at the quiet and calm life of the 13 FDNY firefighters who are stationed on the island.

The WSJWE has landed. People have been rumbling about it for months now. Dow Jones employees have been upset about the extra hours and extra employees it requires. The New York Times has been reorganizing itself to make way for its arrival (can't you hear the Grey Lady thinking "hmmm, why don't I move Maureen to Saturday, then they'll buy us too. And Times Select, let's do that the same weekend, that'll steal their thunder."). And now today it's here. The Wall Street Journal Weekend Edition has its first edition this weekend and it is, on first inspection... eh. To be fair though, we're not generally Journal readers and there are a few interesting pieces in the paper (the Pearl Jam chef who has been helping tsunami victims, the companies who outsource their company sports leagues) but still. The big new section, "Pursuits," seems like any other lifestyle section to us (which might be nice for other people, but we're just sick to death of lifestyle sections). Further, we'll be curious to see how many of the advertisers bulking up this first edition will still be around in two weeks (our guess, about half). But again, we're just not Journal people.
