OWS Has Patron Saints In Nuns Crusading For Corporate Responsibility

OWS Has Patron Saints In Nuns Crusading For Corporate Responsibility

As the Post and other Occupy Wall Street detractors know, it's easy to dismiss protesters when they're young, vocal, and occasionally law-breaking. But trying to get charges of impudence and ignorance to stick to nuns is a little tougher. The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia have been taking their message of corporate responsibility to board rooms years before anyone pitched a tent in Zuccotti Park, and even if the businessmen they talk to don't heed their advice, they're at least obliged to listen. "You're not going to get any sympathy for cutting off a nun at your annual meeting," a leader of a shareholder firm tells the Times. more ›

Newt Gingrich & Herman Cain: Occupy Wall Streeters Jealous, Uneducated

2012 GOP presidential candidates Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich are positive that this whole Occupy Wall Street thing is overblown. This is because they represent all of the everyday millionaire pizza moguls and Tiffany's marketers/serial adulterers who know that these nurses, students, union members and other "people" are just jealous. "Part of it is jealousy…My parents never said that we hope the rich people lose something so that we can get something," Cain said at a joint appearance on Face the Nation, presumably forgetting that time he left a flaming bag of poo on John Schnattner's doorstep. more ›

Millionaire Pizza Mogul Herman Cain: Occupy Wall Street Is A Conspiracy

Millionaire Pizza Mogul Herman Cain: Occupy Wall Street Is A Conspiracy

According to a new poll by Rasmussen Reports, 33 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Occupy Wall Street protesters (only 27 percent have a negative view, while 40 percent have no opinion). Most importantly, 79 percent of Americans agree with the protesters primary point that the “The big banks got bailed but the middle class got left behind.” But don't tell that to Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, because he thinks the whole thing is a giant pro-Obama conspiracy: "I don't have the facts to back this up, but I happen to believe that these demonstrations are planned and orchestrated to distract from the failed policies of the Obama Administration," he told the WSJ. At least he admitted there were no facts involved in his statements. more ›

Yesterday marked the beginning of the "occupation of Wall Street," a mass protest organized by left-leaning groups like Anonymous and Adbusters aimed at corporate greed and designed to force President Obama to "capitulate" to their demands. While the exact ultimatum won't be made public until next Saturday, chants of "Whose street? Our street!" and "This is what democracy looks like! This is what hypocrisy looks like!" (shouted at banks) made it clear that the demonstrators were venting their well-founded anger at the "masters of the universe." more ›

UES Woman Sentenced For Torture Murdering Boyfriend

UES Woman Sentenced For Torture Murdering Boyfriend

The Upper East Side woman who tortured and suffocated her boyfriend two years ago was sentenced yesterday to 17 years to life for the torture killing. Raquel Glenn, 55, insisted for years that voices in her head commanded her to kill handyman Chiwa (Freeman) Chan, but prosecutors told the court the real reason all along had been greed: "The (state-appointed) psychiatrist was of the opinion the defendant committed this crime, not because of any psychiatric condition, but because she was angry at her current circumstances without any money and without any prospects of getting any—and she took that anger out on Freeman," said Assistant District Attorney Michelle Kaminsky. more ›

Hedge Fund Executive Slammed At Sentencing

One of the many involved a massive insider trading ring was sentenced yesterday, and U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero said of hedge fund co-founder Mark Kurland, "He had a choice as a leader of the financial industry. He could have led by example. Instead, he chose to follow. He became a joiner, surrendering to the spree of the financial market's virtual mob mentality that nearly brought down this country's financial industry in the quest for ever bigger and faster gains." Kurland pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud and will serve two years and three months, plus must forfeit $900,000 he made; he said he was heartbroken and his actions "destroyed my reputation and everything I have worked hard for my entire life." more ›

Goldman Sachs Shareholders Keep Blankfein In Power

Goldman Sachs Shareholders Keep Blankfein In Power

Yesterday, Goldman Sachs head Lloyd Blankfein addressed shareholders in a "relatively friendly" meeting, "We understand that there is a disconnect between how we as a firm view ourselves and how the broader public perceives our role and activities in the market. To address this, we need a rigorous self-examination." Shareholders re-elected him as chairman after Blankfein faced critics and recognized the company needed outreach with the public. He also claimed to "like shopping at Wal-Mart." Dealbreaker noticed a CNN segment where NYU MBA candidates said they “don’t want to work at a firm like Lehman Brothers” and “what you can respect about Goldman is that they’re greedy but they’re long-term greedy.more ›

Astor Jurors Celebrate Trial's End At Blue Ribbon

Some of the jurors who endured the 19-week-long trial surrounding the late Brooke Astor's estate explained their decision to find Astor's 85-year-old son guilty of grand larceny. Yvonne Fernandez, 52, said of Anthony Marshall, whom prosecutors said was driven to loot his mother's fortune for his wife Charlene, "It sort of reminded me, when I was in Brooklyn years ago and there was a blackout, and the lower-income people were stealing refrigerators and TVs, and they felt that was due to them," adding, "We all have our flaws, and you know, of course, the flaw here was greed." more ›

Pope Benedict: Greed Is Not Good

Pope Benedict: Greed Is Not Good

Today, on the eve of the G8 meeting in Italy, Pope Benedict issued an encyclical letter discussing the economic crisis, specifically noting the problems with greed. He wrote, "Profit is useful if it serves as a means toward an end. Once profit becomes the exclusive goal, if it is produced by improper means and without the common good as its ultimate end, it risks destroying wealth and creating poverty." more ›

Wall Street Not Happy With Clinton's Attacks

Wall Street Not Happy With Clinton's Attacks

In her successful attempt to appeal to working class primary voters, Senator Hillary Clinton has been catching heat from Wall Street. The Sun notes that yesterday, her camp dawdled for 24 hours before correcting reports that she had asked an audience in Indiana: “Why don’t we hold these Wall Street money-grubbers responsible for their role in this recession?” The quote angered some in the financial industry; after all they're not money-grubbers, they're money-hoarders. more ›

Brooke Astor's Son Pleads Not Guilty to Criminal Charges

Anthony Marshall, the only son of New York society legend Brooke Astor, pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of criminal activity related to the handling of his mother's finances. The 83-year-old former Marine spoke in court once (to utter "not guilty") and, after his bond was approved, left the courthouse using a cane. He also apparently cried. Among the accusations the Manhattan DA's office made against Marshall and his former lawyer Francis Morrissey (a PDF... more ›
