Apparently Half Of Brooklyn Is Always Naked

Apparently Half Of Brooklyn Is Always Naked

Here's just another example of why most people need another lesson in statistics, or at least just the value of obtaining a wide and varied sample size when conducting a poll. Blog It To Me decided to take a look at the "tastemaking" borough of Brooklyn to see what they're wearing. And apparently for neighborhoods like Bay Ridge and Midwood, it's nothing. more ›

Twitter Data Says New York Is Always Cranky

Twitter Data Says New York Is Always Cranky

For the past three years, researchers from Harvard and Northeastern have been monitoring Twitter, sorting 300 million updates by location and attitude to create a cartogram of the country's moods. And it turns out that no matter what time of day it is, Twittering New Yorkers are always in a bad mood. An animated map (below) shows the number of Twitter updates through an average week, with states increasing in size based on the proportional number of updates in the area. Iridesco Watercooler put together this cool graph of the data released earlier this week by the Center for Urban Future breaking down chain stores in NYC. With a borough by borough breakdown, the graph illustrates how Dunkin Donuts outer borough presence (including a whopping 29 Staten Island locations!) gave it the top spot amongst the retail giants. The blog also pointed out this alarming statistic: there are as many American Apparel locations in the five boroughs as there are Barnes and Nobles. more ›

Summer Festival Guide...Charted

Andrew Kuo's charts are charmingly confusing, and his latest in the NY Times find their roots in his first summer festival: Lollapalooza '92 in New Jersey. Since then, he's learned a lot, and he's charted the knowledge for all who need some guidance as this summer's fests inch up on the calendar. more ›
