Will A Bigger, Taller, Rezoned Midtown Be Bloomberg's Legacy?

Will A Bigger, Taller, Rezoned Midtown Be Bloomberg's Legacy?

Mayor Bloomberg has made many plays over his two-and-a-half terms at leaving a lasting physical legacy, but none really worked out. The maybe-too-short One World Trade isn't really his, the Jets stadium never happened (and neither did the Olympics), Atlantic Yards is enriching a few while alienating many of the locals—and don't even get us started on CityTime. So what's a billionaire from Boston to do? Well, according to the Daily News, try and rush through rezoning to rebuild the area around Grand Central taller! Sleeker! With less soul! Yup, views of the Chrysler Building could soon be but a memory. more ›

Philippe Petit Will Recreate His Wire Walk Above Grand Central

Philippe Petit, aka Man on Wire, will recreate one of his famous wirewalks (not that one) from 1987, when he walked 80 feet above Grand Central Terminal’s main concourse. According to the NY Post, the reprise of the walk will be in honor of the station’s 100-year anniversary and will take place next February 1st at the stroke of midnight. more ›

Grand Central's 100th Birthday Is Just Around The Corner

Grand Central's 100th Birthday Is Just Around The Corner

Next February the grandest train station we've got left, Grand Central Terminal, turns 100. And, we learned today, the MTA is looking to celebrate that achievement in style all year long. Speaking of style, Caroline Kennedy is the honorary chair of the terminal's centennial committee. The committee also boasts Spike Lee, so you know those are going to be fun meetings. more ›

iPad 3 Release: See The Lines At Grand Central's Apple Store

The new iPad—the third generation—is officially on sale today and, like clockwork, there are lines outside stores. This is the first product release for the new Apple Store at Grand Central, and it seems like the terminal's cavernous halls are perfect for waiting during this miserable day, some of the lines are inside long hallways. more ›

Video: Cops Arrest Activist For Yelling About NDAA In Grand Central

Three protesters were arrested and four issued summonses yesterday in Grand Central Terminal, where approximately 150 demonstrators formed a "flash mob" to protest President Obama's signing of the National Defense Authorization Act [NDAA], a military spending bill that also authorizes the military to detain American citizens indefinitely without due process. Obama signed it in Hawaii on New Year's Eve, and it hasn't gotten that much attention in the media, but some people at least are a little alarmed about this, and they were expressing their outrage during rush hour yesterday. In this video, protester Lauren Digioia gets arrested around the two minute mark: more ›

Demonstrators will be in the terminal at 5 p.m. for "a spontaneous show of people power in reaction to Obama’s treasonous signing of the National Defense Authorization Act." And in addition to the spontaneous show, protesters are promising a mysterious "special treat." Hmmm, a Hipster Cop kissing booth? Twinkling finger puppet show? Tenting? more ›

Video: Grand Central Commuters Unfazed By A Cappella College Group

Recently an a cappella group took to Grand Central during rush hour to belt out a tribute to Briggs & Riley Spinners (how very Andy Bernard from of them!)... and elsewhere, in a forest, a tree fell. Commuters barely even blinked as The University of Rochester Midnight Ramblers sang their hearts out—but don't sweat it kids, Bruce Springsteen gets the same treatment. more ›

A Photo Tour Of Grand Central's New Tennis Club

A Photo Tour Of Grand Central's New Tennis Club

When we heard yesterday that the formerly "secret" tennis courts at Grand Central Terminal reopened, we immediately dispatched photographer Sam Horine to get total coverage. Here, then, is a full photo tour of the Vanderbilt Tennis Club, which includes a full-size tennis court, two smaller practice "alleys," a fitness facility, lockers, and, by the looks of it, a very clean and tidy reception center where you pay up to play. As we mentioned, prices during the day range from $90-$250, and high rollers can also arrange for private lessons on the full court for $160-$195 per hour. more ›

Stormtroopers, Jawas Turn Grand Central Into Mos Eisley Cantina

It wasn't enough that Jawas invaded Citifield on Tuesday night in a blatant attempt to strum up sympathy for the plight of the Blu-Ray industry—they also made their way to Grand Central today! Characters from the Star Wars universe were spotted around 42nd Street, promoting Saturday's release of the nine-disc Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-Ray edition. Not everyone was thrilled to encounter Wookies, Ewoks and Stormtroopers: "I really don't have time to deal with these Star Wars characters outside Grand Central," tweeted Kenyon Cory. Captain Kirk shares your pain, Kenyon. more ›

Renderings: Apple's Grand Central Store REVEALED!

That Apple would be moving into the old Metrazur space above Grand Central Terminal we already knew. But how exactly the already under-construction Mac mecca will look, that was less clear. Until now. Behold, three glimpses of the future! more ›

Man Pretends To Be Homeless In Grand Central For A Week

Man Pretends To Be Homeless In Grand Central For A Week

It's not as gimmicky as it sounds: Queens-based artist and activist Yusef Ramelize is spending the week of August 21st as a homeless man in Grand Central in an effort to raise money and awareness for the issue, in a campaign he's calling, appropriately, Homeless for One Week. We spoke to Ramelize, a creative manager at a publishing company by day, about the project. more ›

MTA Board Approves Apple, Shake Shack GCT Outposts

MTA Board Approves Apple, Shake Shack GCT Outposts

Well, that was fast! Just last week we broke the news that Danny Meyer's beloved Shake Shack was making a play for Grand Central Terminal and today the MTA's board has approved it at their meeting—even though it turns out it wasn't even the highest bidder for its lower concourse space. Also approved to roll into the famous train station? Apple, which was given some interesting guidelines for how its store can be laid out. more ›

Video: Cop Doors Cyclist, Then Demands To Know If He's On Drugs

You've got to hand it to the NYPD for keeping cyclists on their toes; sometimes they'll almost door you then chase you down and arrest you; other times they do door you, and blame you for probably being on drugs. That second scenario was described by a cyclist who was doored by an oblivious cop near Grand Central Terminal. Here's video of the door knocking him right off his bike: more ›

Apple Store In Grand Central Will Be Largest In The World

Apple Store In Grand Central Will Be Largest In The World

Proving the maxim that "rumors are always true," the MTA has announced that Grand Central Station will indeed get a 23,000-square-foot Apple store, so weary travelers can gum up the display iPads with their greasy Shake Shack fingers and yell at nerds who have the power to void their service warranties. According to the Post, the store will be Apple's largest in the world, and takes the place of the Métrazur in the terminal's north and northeast balconies. Fans of the restaurant should take heart that the Chirping Chicken is going nowhere. more ›

Cop Rides Subway Scooter On Subway Shuttle

Cop Rides Subway Scooter On Subway Shuttle

Did you think that the NYPD would keep those T3 electric standup scooters' roaming restricted to subway stations alone? A subway rider saw one on the shuttle train between Times Square and Grand Central, prompting a reaction that surely spanned the range from "What the!" to "Well, at least he's not parked in the bike lane." more ›

The Lunch Quadrant: Grand Central

The Lunch Quadrant: Grand Central

Welcome to the Lunch Quadrant, where we offer you four lunch options (two standing, two sitting) by a given subway stop. Last week we ate around Penn Station, a tricky place to eat well if ever there was one, and so this week we thought we'd look at the other end of the spectrum: Grand Central Terminal. Where Penn Station is dark and ugly, Grand Central is soaring and, well, grand. And where Penn Station has a poor selection of good food to eat, Grand Central and its lovely food court has the opposite problem. For the sake of simplicity we narrowed our list down to just spots inside the terminal (so, for instance, that's why you don't see La Fonda de la Sol) and even then we had trouble narrowing the options down to just four. Prefer Brother Jimmy's or Junior's to one of our picks? We totally understand why you might be miffed—let it out in the comments! more ›

Bird Week Continues With Giant Decapitated Eagle Statue

Bird Week Continues With Giant Decapitated Eagle Statue

Today, The New York Times continues its coverage of Bird Week, a seven-day holiday we never actually knew existed until Tuesday, when Mike Tyson told us all about it. But now that we've been "revisiting the city’s avian history" along with the paper, turns out there's actually some pretty crazy stuff to be found. For example! The tale of the concrete eagle head that rose anew from the remains of the original, not-so-heinous Penn Station many moons ago. more ›

Beer Table Bringing Growlers To Grand Central

Beer Table Bringing Growlers To Grand Central

Soon enough sober commuters will have another option for lubrication when passing through Grand Central: Park Slope's Beer Table has signed a seven-year-lease for a 300-square-foot outpost in the station's Graybar passage between Lexington Avenue and the Great Hall. more ›

Automat Pops-Up in Grand Central Today and Tomorrow

Automat Pops-Up in Grand Central Today and Tomorrow

Our automat nostalgia is being rekindled in Grand Central Terminal, where the retro fast food experience has been recreated to promote NBC's America's Next Great Restaurant. As Grub Street's Daniel Maurer puts it, "Yes, it’s a publicity stunt, but we have a major soft spot for automats." The last automat closed in Times Square in 1991, but at their peak during the last century you could find dozens of the coin-operated eateries around town. (Bamn! tried to revive the concept a few years ago on St. Mark's Street, but couldn't stay afloat.) And while this rendering is sadly lacking in atavistic charm, it is currently the only automat in town, so we'll take it. more ›

Grand Central Terminal Apple Store Rumor Excites Nerds

Grand Central Terminal Apple Store Rumor Excites Nerds

Will Beaux Arts style meet sleek technology? Well, if the Cult of Mac's report is to be believed, then Apple is putting its largest store at Grand Central Terminal: "The store will open in the fall, likely early September — and it will be Apple’s largest retail space in the world. The store already has a name: Apple Store, Grand Central, according to a source close the company. The source said Apple will be making an internal announcement within the next month or so." more ›

Scenes From Thanksgiving Eve At Grand Central, Penn Station

If you're traveling today or tomorrow for Thanksgiving, we hope that you have a safe journey. For those of us staying at home, well, just be relieved we're not fighting crowds at Penn Station or Grand Central or—shudder—a local airport on this busy travel day. more ›

Tennis Is Coming Back To Grand Central Terminal

Tennis Is Coming Back To Grand Central Terminal

Last year, the "secret" tennis courts at Grand Central Terminal were eliminated to make way for a new Metro-North conductors lounge. However, there was enough room left over for another court and two hitting alleys, and the Wall Street Journal checks in with the progress, "Only in Manhattan, where indoor tennis courts are rarer than personal garages, would anyone sign up a year in advance for an hour of tennis. And only on this space-strapped island would they pay as much as $210 an hour for the privilege." more ›

Video: LGBT Flash Mob Stages "Die-In" At Grand Central

Video: LGBT Flash Mob Stages "Die-In" At Grand Central

Several hundred LGBT NYers crowded into the main concourse at Grand Central yesterday evening and lay down for, “Flash Mob: Homophobia Kills Die-In.” The protesters, who unfurled a giant yellow banner reading, END HOMO/ TRANSPHOBIC APARTHEID IN AMERICA,”, disrupted foot traffic in the terminal in the midst of rush hour, while organizers read the names of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender victims of murder or of suicide prompted by bullying and violence. more ›

Former '90s Star For Sale!

Former '90s Star For Sale!

Claire Danes is probably pining for the days she had to worry about stalkers, now that she's stalking out corporate payouts! She recently shilled for an eyelash enhancement product called Latisse (brought to you by the Botox folk), and tomorrow she'll be giving painting demos in Grand Central Terminal! Or something. According to a press release we received, this is to celebrate the launch of Valspar Paint’s new Hi-DEF Advanced Color System. Get there tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. to check out the actress formerly known as Angela Chase paint walls. (Speaking of which, it was Chase who once said, “I bet people can actually die of embarrassment. I bet it’s been medically proven.") To be fair, tomorrow's event is also to benefit art advocacy non-profit United States Artists (though this doesn't mean Danes isn't getting paid). Still, Daria would never pull this shit. more ›

Overnight Shift at Grand Central is Where the Party's At

Overnight Shift at Grand Central is Where the Party's At

Three Grand Central workers were busted for sneaking whiskey and pot into their underground office during their overnight shift on Thursday. Supervisor Stephen Hussey, foreman Eugene Sokolowski, and mason Thomas Palazzola each received a summons for alleged marijuana possession after MTA investigators discovered them sitting around a table with bags of pot and a half bottle of whiskey just 20 minutes into their shift. So is that where all the Union Square pot went? more ›
