Pulitzer Prizes Announced
http://www.nytimes.com/ref/national/deathonthetracks_index.html?">railroad fatalities and the coverups behind them. We spent some of the evening reading a lot of the winning work, including Newsday's Dele Olojede's excellent and harrowing series on the tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, which shared the international reporting prize with the LA Times, and the Willamette Week's winning investigative reporting revealing a former Oregon governor's sexual abuse of his 14 year-old baby-sitter. While it's natural that a lot of amazing reporting would come out of urban centers like NY, LA, and Chicago, it's great to see other papers get recognized. You can read the work on the Pulitzer website.
Governor McGreevey's Out On The Town

Governor Corzine? Maybe...
McGreevey Steps Down Citing Extramarital Affair
Governor James McGreevey announced yesterday that he was stepping down as Governor of the Garden State yesterday in a press conference where he also announced that he was gay. With support from his ex-wife and current wife, McGreevey said he had his feelings since adolescence and that the truth was that he was "a gay American", that he "engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man", and that "given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign."
PATH Train Reopens
The reopening of the PATH Train station at the World Trade Center was greeted by government officials and citizens alike with excitement and a sense of accomplishment with the completion of this 16 month station rehabilitation. The opening was bittersweet, as memories of Port Authority colleagues and other PATH train commuters lost during September 11 were evoked. One lower Manhattan resident told the Post, "They knocked us down, but they can't knock us out." And Christy Ferer, mayor's liaison to families of September 11 victims and whose husband, Neil Levin, executive director of the Port Authority was killed during the attacks told the Times, "He'd be very proud to see this organization kick into gear...No, let me take that back. I think he'd have expected no less."
Free Path Rides Tomorrow
The re-opening of the Path Train at the World Trade Center will be marked by NY Governor Pataki and NJ Governor McGreevey at 2PM tomorrow, with free rides until midnight. The governors will ride in a train that was the last to leave the WTC Path station on September 11. This station will accept Metrocards at turnstiles, except weekly and unlimited cards. Additionally, since this is station at Church Street is a temporary one, there is no heat or air conditioning, no concessions, and or advertising. A permanent station will open in 2006.
Fight for the Nets: NJ vs. Brooklyn
It's like a smackdown between Jen and Jake - if Jake had any interest in professional basketball. There's a fight over the New Jersey Nets (Gothamist knows - of all things!) between New Jersey and Brooklyn. Rich NJ senator Jon Corzine is teaming up with developer Charles Kushner and other NJ politicos (Governor McGreevey, former Senator Torricelli) to keep the Nets in NJ, countering NY developer Bruce Ratner's plan to bring the Eastern Conference champions to downtown Brooklyn. (There is a third interested party, Charles Wang, former chairman of Computer Associates who also owns the Islanders, but it's more exciting to say "NJ vs. Brooklyn" than "Long Island vs. Brooklyn.") The "Brooklyn" Nets would factor into a greater Brooklyn redevelopment plan. Gothamist is most amused by Nets foward Richard Jefferson who tells the Post, "I just work there. I got traded once, so I'm just a piece of meat."
