As the public readies to ooh and aah over products at its spacious Fifth Avenue Apple Store, praise is being given to Apple vice president Ron Johnson for his retailing and merchandising innovations. The NY Times looks at his background, which includes Mervyns then 16 years at Target (when Steve Jobs told him Apple "is one of the biggest brands in the world," Johnson told him then the stores should be big) Forrester says that Apple Store revenue was $2489 per square foot, whereas it's $971 at a Best Buy; Apple says Target averages $300 per square foot. Jane Jacobs' death will be talked about for a while, because issues she questioned continue to be relevant today, and we expect many articles about her and influence to come. But, for now, here are a couple links on Jane Jacobs - and let us know about more:
Roger Ebert gives his spoiler-filled thoughts on the controversy; Million $ Baby was his top movie of the year. The other NY Times story about Million Dollar Baby only mentioned the product placement for Clorox.
Governor James McGreevey announced yesterday that he was stepping down as Governor of the Garden State yesterday in a press conference where he also announced that he was gay. With support from his ex-wife and current wife, McGreevey said he had his feelings since adolescence and that the truth was that he was "a gay American", that he "engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man", and that "given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign."
The Post notes that the Bedford, NY home Martha will be confined to is a sprawling 153 acres, and if she wears an electronic bracelet, the bracelet won't go as far as her land does. The NY Times looks at the Danbury women's prison Martha may go to and also says Martha will probably still influence her company, "even from jail." Expect more products and themes in the grey and bright orange family, as well as ways to make your home flattering in fluorescent light, although Gothamist did see White Oleander, so maybe it'll be more denim.

Just when you thought you were tired of Michael Jackson, he becomes interesting again. Admit it – there could not be a more insane mugshot picture; he sort of looks like a comic book villain, like the Joker [as suggested by friend JW]. He's Bad! He's Dangerous! This is a Thriller! He's Off the Wall! And as Gawker notes, all the Michael Jackson jokes were written 10 years ago ("Do You Remember The Time [insert bizarre MJ incident here]?"
News that Kobe Bryant bought his wife a $4 million ring last week may either be taken as PR stunt or truly the "big love" that the jeweler who made the ring claims is between Kobe and wife Vanessa. The purple diamond is 8 carats, and not the first of extravagant jewelry Kobe has purchased: He also got their 16-carat wedding set and a 7.5-carat yellow diamond at Santa Monica store, Raffinity.
