It's Mike and Arnie, together again! The Time magazine co-cover pols, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, made a Los Angeles appearance with Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell to announce the creation of a "nonpartisan organization that will advocate for more, and smarter, federal spending on infrastructure." The Mayor and maybe presidential candidate slammed the government, referenced the New Deal and more. Some of his statements:

In politics, winning elections and protecting a party majority is more important than solving problems and so short-term pork invariably wins over long-term investing and special interests win over the rest of us...

  • Wild 6, Rangers 3: What do they call it when someone scores five goals? Don't ask the Rangers. They had no answers for Marian Gaborik, who did just that. It was the first time in 11 years that someone lit the lamp five times. Michal Rozsival, Martin Straka and Nigel Dawes had the New York goals. The Rangers are just 2-5-1 in their last eight games, and they play at a tough Colorado team Friday night.

  • All is well in Knicks camp. They're playing well on the court, fans love them, MSG is packed, all their players are completely sane, and their coach/GM is the talk of the town. Actually, that's how things are in Knicks-fantasy land. Back here on planet earth, the Knicks are a dismal 2-7, sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, their star point guard is coming off the bench, and their coach/GM is throwing his...

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger muscled into town to promote the Golden state's environmental policies, and he made a strange metaphor in the process. amNew York reported that he compared "'tree-hugging' stigma of environmentalism to the reputation for weirdness that once beset bodybuilders": "The gym used to be thought of as a dungeon for weirdoes and fanatics, but that has changed. Now it's changing for environmentalists." The Sun says it was a joke, but that's pretty lame, though we bet we would have laughed hearing it from Arnold

Spring appears to have, er, sprung, at least temporarily, in most of the Ist-A-Verse, so naturally, we're all feeling pretty good. (Yes, we know that spring doesn't start till later this month. Just let us enjoy our weather!) And that makes us that much more eager to share all of the nifty things we're up to...

With Jamal Crawford out for the year and David Lee and Nate Robinson sidelined, the Knicks went some different lineups and some different players and it all worked out. Mardy Collins, Malik Rose and Steve Francis all made significant contributions while Quentin Richardson led the team in rebounds to go along with his 30 points. Stephon Marbury added 34 and Eddy Curry had 22 in the win.

The Knicks built up another lead in overtime and saw that slip away too. With 20 seconds left and a one-point lead, Jamal Crawford inexplicably tried a three-pointer with eight seconds left on the shot clock. Utah rebounded the ball and scored with just over three seconds left to take the lead.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg met with California Governor Arnold Schwarzengger in the Golden State yesterday, and it was a total love fest. The Governator told reporters:

[Republicans and Democrats in Congress] are frozen. They can’t get anything done in Washington because it’s Democrats against Republicans and Republicans against Democrats, rather than, ‘Let us solve the problems of this country.’ And so this is why I admire him — I admire Mayor Bloomberg. He’s my soul mate. He’s the man.
Aw - we're sure that the Mayor is making sure all his West Coast friends drop a pretty penny into Arnold's campaign chest, as he did head out there for Arnie's fundraisers. (Oh, and to talk about "issues" too.)

Nets player Cliff Robinson has been suspended for five games after violating the NBA's drug policy. What the violation was exactly is unclear, but what is clear is that the suspension is effective tonight's Game 3 against the Miami Heat and that it wipes him out for the rest of this series. Which sucks, because the Nets needed him to guard Shaq and take those fouls. Robinson was suspended for violating the drug policy in 2005 when he was with the Golden State Warriors, right before he was traded to the Nets. Oh, Uncle Cliffy!

Larry Brown still longs for his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. At 0-5, it would be nice if that win would come sooner than later. Last night, the Knicks came mighty close against the Golden State Warriors, but lost the game in the final minute, 86-84. Despite the fact that the Knicks came out to play in the first quarter (ha, we're so funny), ending the first period of play with a 10 point lead, they fell short. The Knicks even led by 13 at one point and held the lead for more than half the game (33 minutes). It's like they can't buy a break.

Larry Brown's Knicks continue to struggle, losing 95-83 to Portland Wednesday night. Brown started his third different lineup in four games, but it was the play in the second half that doomed the Knicks. After limiting the Blazers to 15 of 46 shooting in the first half, the Knicks promplty gave up a 10-0 Portland run to open the second half. Their defense disintegrated and they turned the ball over, and Portland took advantage.

Friday's ugly loss to the Magic put some spark in the Knicks on Sunday. They beat the Golden State Warriors 115-99 at MSG, and have now won 4 of their last 5. The trio of Tim Thomas, Stephon Marbury, and Michael Sweetney scored a total of 70 (!!) for NY, and new acquisition Mo Taylor added 15 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Friday's setback aside, it does seem like the somewhat maligned trades have brought some fresh energy to the Knicks' clubhouse. Can the wins continue? And is anyone surprised that Tim Thomas has found his shot right as he's coming into a contract year?

The art of the heartbreaking defeat is reaching new heights this year in New York. And no, I'm not talking about the Yankees. Allen Iverson capped a stellar 38-point night by dishing the winning assist in a 106-105 win for the 76ers against the Knicks on Monday night. Marc Jackson added 22 for Philly, who now have a share of the Atlantic Division lead.

Did Isiah Thomas choose Vin Baker over "Shaq Stopper" Erick Dampier? Actually no, but it appears he chose to bring in Jamal Crawford over the free agent center from Golden State.

The Knicks may be closer to adding some of the key free agents that they have pursuing all summer. According to various press reports, the Knicks and Bulls have agreed in principle to a deal that would send a newly resigned Jamal Crawford and Jerome Williams to the Big Apple for Dikembe Mutombo, Othella Harrington, Cezary Trybanski and Frank Williams. All four of the Knicks in the deal have contracts that expire at the end of the season. Knicks GM Isiah Thomas had wanted to include Shandon Anderson in the deal, but not even Bulls GM John Paxson is crazy enough to take on the rest of his contract.

Further proof that it is the Warriors, and not the Clippers, that are the NBA's most hapless franchise. Golden State has agreed in principle to deal prized free agent center Erick Dampier to the Knicks for back ups Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington.

Unlike last year's draft, which had high schooler LeBron James as the top prize, this year's draft seems to be short on impact players and long on potential. When the draft finally comes around at the end of June, expect to hear the word "upside" at least 70 times. Perhaps Gothamist will keep a count. UConn junior Emeka Okafor, fresh off a national title, figures to be the top selection this year.
