Rudy Giuliani may have exited the presidential campaign, but that doesn't mean he's disappeared. For starters, we hope those Rudy Giuliani campaign staffers who gave up their paychecks feel good about this: According to the Washington Post, Giuliani's campaign paid his firm Giuliani Partners $60,000 in rent and paid Giuliani Security & Safety $300,000 for security. We don't understand why he stopped running - it's a perfect way to convert donations into revenue! Well, his lawyer told the WaPo that Giuliani "recused himself from taking profits. His portion would be donated to charity."

Rudy Giuliani's good financial fortune derived from the formation of Giuliani Partners is leading to political misfortune, as yet another piece of lucrative business he conducted in the private sector has come back to haunt his candidacy. Recently, his involvement with Purdue Pharma--the producers of the painkiller OxyContin--has come under scrutiny.

- Edwards tops Romney 59 - 21 percent. Quinnipiac's Polling Institute director Maurice Carroll noted that New York is "still a blue state" and wonders if Clinton and Giuliani will bother coming for the primary in February, since they'll do well. And if you're wondering about former Vice President Al Gore and Law & Order actor (and former Senator) Fred Thompson's chances, Caroll said Gore is tied with Obama while Thompson "is doing almost as well as multi-millionaire Mitt Romney."

- The goings-on at Rudy Giuliani's own company were the focus of two articles this past weekend. The Daily News wondered how his client list at Giuliani Partners will stack up to scrutiny, as there are gambling associations and polluters on it. Well, there are benefits to him being a Republican. And the NY Times looked at how Giuliani's campaigning might affect his company - it's questionable how successful the company has been. How did Giuliani spend part of his weekend? Why, attending the Bull Riders invitational at Madison Square Garden.

Team Giulani is on the defensive offensive after the Daily News revealed what was written in a presidential planning binder left behind by a Giuliani aide. Giuliani spokeswoman Sunny Mindel calls it a "dirty trick" that someone has played. From the Daily News:

"This is clearly a dirty trick," said Giuliani spokeswoman Sunny Mindel. "The voters are sick and tired of this kind of thing."

Republican candidate for Attorney General Jeanine Pirro continued to make her campaign appearances, and her daughter Cristine stood up for her. At a Manhattan fundraiser lasted night, the Daily News reports that Cristine "Kiki" Pirro, University of Pennsylvania senior, said, "While others may question her decisions, I love her for choosing to do what she thought was best for our family. You know, we've taken a lot of hits as a family, but we are standing together forever and ever." She also said, "There aren't enough lies and leaks to break this family," which is sweet and sad at the same time. Notably, this is the fundraider Rudy Giuliani was supposed to attend but dropped out of (the Giuliani Partners connection with Bernie was probably too hot) and Governor Pataki praised Pirro - but by satellite. Ouch!

That thud you heard this afternoon? The jaws of Jeanine Pirro's campaign staffers. It turns out that Republican candidate for NY State Attorney General Pirro is under state and federal criminal investigation. WNBC's Jonathan Dienst had the scoop: State and federal agencies were looking into whether Pirro eavesdropped on her husband, who she suspected might be cheating on her. (Well, he did father a love child a couple years into their marriage.)

What the heck? The Crain's reports that Rudy Giuliani and a team of other investors may make a bid to buy the Chicago Cubs. Hall of Fame Cubs shortstop Ernie Banks ("Let's Play Two!") is interested in buying the team, though current owner, the Tribune Co. claims the team is not for sale (in spite of other scuttlebutt that Mark Cuban may be interested in the Cubs as well). And Banks says Giuliani Partners and LA-based Comstock Capital approached him about the deal, but neither firm would confirm that much.

Yesterday, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani testified at the death penalty trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, telling jurors about what he saw, thought and felt on September 11, 2001. He described seeing people jump from the World Trade Center towers and said, "By the time the second plane hit, we knew it was a terrorist attack. This was war. This was a battle." Giuliani didn't look at Moussaoui much, but Moussaoui did watch Giuliani. Family members of September 11 victims also spoke during the day. Moussaoui's lawyer described his client as a minor player in Al Qaeda suffering from mental illness; Moussaoui did yell, "Burn in the USA!" during a break.

For his part, Rudy is saying that he did not ask for Kerik's resignation despite all the news surrounding his former business partner. One of Giuliani Partners affiliates, formally called Guiliani-Kerik, has been renamed Giuliani Security & Safety.

In a freak Times Square accident, a security guard was killed when a freight elevator in the Ernst & Young building went out of control. The accident occurred at around 4:45 yesterday afternoon when the counterweight hurled the elevator cab into the roof. The E&Y building is a mere two years old and is home to Ernst & Young and Giuliani Partners, the former mayor's consulting firm. How elevators work.
