On January 12th, 2011, we caught our first glimpse of a girl dancing on the Staten Island Ferry. Intrigued, we wanted to know more, and quickly found out the video was just a teaser for what would be a 70-minute music video filmed around New York City, and set to the tune of Girl Talk's All Day album. Now here we are, almost a year later, to the date, delivering the final chapter of Girl Walk//All Day.
Video Exclusive: It's The Girl Walk // All Day Finale (And The Full Movie!)
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day Gets New Yorkers Dancing In The Streets
Today we offer you Chapter 11 of Girl Walk//All Day, the beginning of the end (next Tuesday will be the grand finale). Below, enjoy a whole lot of dancing in the streets, with moves from some new faces to the series. You'll also catch glimpses of Central Park... and the Williamsburg Bridge aerialist!
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day Goes To Yankee Stadium
Happy New Year! We're celebrating with another chapter in the Girl Walk // All Day saga, which today, brings our young protagonist to Yankee Stadium. Sadly, she's kicked out for her antics (she should have tried Citi Field), and banished back to the streets (and Grand Central) in search of someone to dance with. But first, girls in legwarmers:
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day Goes To A Parade
Here it is, Chapter 9 of Girl Walk // All Day, to help you find your inner dancer just in time for New Year's Eve. This chapter features a parade, which we like to believe is a subtle nod to Ferris Bueller's Day Off—while you won't hear "Twist and Shout," you will hear The Isley Brothers "Shout" in the mix. Enjoy!
Video Exclusive: Chapter 8 of Girl Walk // All Day Brings Dancing To Zuccotti Park
In the newest chapter of Girl Walk // All Day, the girl gets a makeover fit for the 1%... and then shows off her new look at Zuccotti Park. Unsurprisingly, while there, she gets a lot of attention from photographers, and the thumbs down from the protesters for flaunting all of her fancy shopping bags.
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day Goes Underground In Chapter 7
You knew it was coming: in the latest chapter of Girl Walk // All Day, the troupe finds themselves on the L train! But before that, there's a sweet street fight (or a dance-off, if you prefer), and some American Museum of Natural History action. Stay tuned for the release of Chapter 8 next Tuesday, to help you get back into the swing of things after the holiday weekend (spoiler: this one features a shopping spree followed by a trip to Zuccotti Park).
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day Goes To The Graveyard In Chapter 6
The lastest Girl Walk // All Day chapter (the 6th, meaning we're half way through the film) brings the dancing to 5th Avenue, the Apollo, and a cemetery (can you tell which one it is?). Enjoy... and we'll be back next Tuesday to keep this party going with another chapter.
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day, Chapter 5 (Featuring Some Dangerous Vespa Dance Moves!)
Here's your premiere of the latest chapter (the fifth!) of the Girl Walk // All Day film. This one brings you from Chinatown (where Tai Chi meets Lil Kim) to Times Square to the Williamsburg Bridge, where you'll meet some young kick ass dancers. Also, we highly recommend you never try dancing on a moving Vespa in New York City traffic, which you'll also see in this chapter. Enjoy!
Video Exclusive: Girl Walk // All Day, Chapter 4 (Featuring Dancing On The Wall Street Bull!)
We're back with another chapter to premiere from the Girl Walk // All Day film. By now you are probably well acquainted with the troupe of dancers making their way around New York City. In this chapter, they bring their moves to the High Line, and atop the Wall Street Bull!
Video Exclusive: Chapter 3 Of Girl Walk // All Day (Featuring The Return Of The "Single Ladies" Dance)
We're back, with the latest chapter of Girl Walk // All Day, the epic music video filmed all over New York City. Below is the premiere of Chapter 3, which brings the protagonist to Lower Manhattan, where she teaches some women how to do the "Single Ladies" dance. But before you get there, you may want to start from the beginning and watch Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 again (or for the first time).
Video Exclusive: Chapter 2 Of Girl Walk // All Day (Featuring The Staten Island Ferry!)
As you know by now, we'll be exclusively premiering the epic Girl Walk // All Day music video right here on Gothamist, chapter-by-chapter, every Tuesday and Friday through early January. Just a few days ago you saw Chapter 1 of the 72-minute film (revisit it now!) and below is Chapter 2, titled "All Aboard." This one may look familiar as its the chapter that first introduced us all to the project almost one year ago, filmed mostly on the Staten Island Ferry. Enjoy, and we'll be back with the next installment on Tuesday, December 6th (just a couple of days before the big premiere at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple).
Governors Ball 2011: Just Fine If You Made The Ferry
Summer music festivals can be a crapshoot: long lines for $8 bottles of water, multiple acts performing at the same time on separate stages, and that guy selling nitrous balloons in the parking lot is usually sold out in a few hours. Saturday's inaugural Governors Ball had all of the surreal trappings of a good festival (funnel cakes!) and few of the snags, as most everyone seemed to leave sunburned and happy.
Video: And Now, Enjoy This L Train Pole Dance
Courtesy of the folks behind Girl Walk/All Day, comes this inspired pole dance routine which took place on the L train last night.
Governors Island To Host An (Indie) Ball This Summer
With the Pool Parties not happening this year (at least not as we knew them), what's a young creative from Brooklyn to do for some entertainment? Get thee to Governors Island! This summer marks the first, in what is hopefully an annual event dubbed the Governors Ball. The music festival will take place on June 18th and features Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Big Boi (of Outkast), Neon Indian, People Under The Stars, Mac Miller, Miami Horror, Passion Pit (DJ Set), Reptar, Outasight and more to be announced. The press release tells us it's going to be: "a massive mid-summer dance party of epic proportions." Surely, with an even more epic line for the ferry.
Video: Help Girl Dance Around NYC
Remember that epic video project combining Girl Talk's latest album with improv dancers and all of New York City? Well if you want to see more, consider helping out the team behind the Girl Walk // All Day project—you can drop some change in their cup right here.
Video: Staten Island Ferry Becomes Improv Dance Club
Recently the Staten Island Ferry became the epicenter of indie cool, albeit briefly, when improvisational dancer Anne Marsen (and a supporting cast of contemporary dancers) joined forces with the new Girl Talk album. Part of the video can be seen below... but the ferry's 15 minutes aren't up just yet! The team behind the video promises it's nowhere near completion—they call it a music video of "epic proportions," and say they'll be shooting through the spring of 2011. After some polishing, the piece will be screened in public (hopefully on the ferry!) and be made available online.
Girl Talk's Williamsburg Pool Party: Nature vs. Over-Nurtured
The Wiliamsburg Pool Parties will wrap up next Sunday with Grizzly Bear and Beach House, but in many ways yesterday's blowout with Girl Talk felt like the real explosive climax to the summer. Fifteen minutes before Girl Talk went on, the line to get in stood still from the entrance at N 8th Street and ran well past the corner of N 11th. Parks officers seemed constantly on the run throughout the set as the hordes of people shut out of the fun became unruly and threatened to push through or turn over port-a-potties. One reader left a report of a chaotic scene from the front gates where allegedly hundreds of people cut the line and were allowed in by security just as the set was getting under way.
Thu Tran, Food Party
Thu Tran is the host and creator of Food Party, quite possibly the only cooking program you should be watching. The show is a labor of strange love between the 27-year-old and her friends, who hand-make the supporting cast, sets and props. In the first two episodes, cardboard versions of Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and LeBron James make dinner plans with Tran, and the artist spends a good half hour whipping up snacks made from common household items like spray cheese, Buffalo chicken wings, and tree-grown doughnuts. Also making appearances on Food Party are the devil (who plays righteous rock hero guitar), and a lovelorn ice cream cone that lives in the permafrost freezer compartment. Maybe just watch some segments here.
Week in Rock: He's a PC Edition
For a guy who got his break after the whole mashup thing seemed to have come and gone, PC-user Girltalk's sure got some legs. The barely legal laptop artist sold out 3 nights at Terminal 5 earlier this week, packing that airplane hanger of a venue with enough spandex, neon and sweat to make Randy Savage jealous. But with great crowds, of course, bring the undesirable element out. His shows have always been everyone-on-the-stage rowdyfests, but as the crowds get bigger, the scene can get a bit skeevy. The show more resembles a bridge and tunnel shindig than ever before. Lots of open shirts and miniskirts up there. Now, since Gillis's mass appeal is rooted in his manipulation of the music of mass appeal, his fan base could potentially keep growing through the stratosphere. The patience of those who enjoyed these types of things on a smaller scale, however, may nearly be gone.
Gothamist Week in Rock: Electric Edition
R.E.M. stormed through town a couple of times this week, first hitting Jones Beach over the weekend, then MSG last night. The Long Island show was a bust for some when the skies opened up and life threatening lightning struck the upper deck of the amphitheater, delaying the bands start. The soaked and scared fans were left with little direction from management, with many bailing on the evening once it was delayed, assuming the looming lightning would keep the band offstage all night. While the venue's questionable safety standards is a serious cause for concern to anyone considering attending a show at the beachside theater (there was plenty of lightning in the sky even after R.E.M. took the stage), those who stuck it out were treated to quite the special show, with the band starting things off with a cover of "Have you Ever Seen the Rain," and plowing through a nearly full length greatest-hits set that went well past curfew.
Week Around the -Ists
Austinist attended a town hall meeting about proposed noise ordinances that could undermine the city's future as the Live Music Capital of the World, and lamented the possible loss of Texas's only feminist bookstore. Throughout the week, they interviewed a bunch of indie fashion designers and D-I-Y websites—Etsy, Ornamental Things, 31 Corn Lane, and Aorta Designs—for the upcoming Stitch Fashion Show. They also did some extensive coverage of last weekend's Fun Fun Fun Fest, which featured over 80 indie rock/electronic/punk bands like Girl Talk and Battles—there's also a video recap of the festival, viewable in HD.

MUSIC: If you see a lot of guitar-toting ladies and gents around the Puck Building right now, that's because CMJ has officially begun. This means there is a ton of music happening (including at our own Gothamist House starting tomorrow). Tonight we suggest hitting up Brooklyn Vegan's show at Bowery Ballroom: Voxtrot, The Rosebuds, Dean & Britta...and so many more.
Gothamist's Week in Rock, Volume 38
Those who missed out on getting tickets to the electrospazzy one-two punch of Dan Deacon and Girl Talk at Webster Hall last Saturday night fell into a bit of luck as the weekend approached. A last minute, late night show was announced for Bowery Ballroom that same night, and the formerly out of luck were now sitting pretty, seeing the two perform in a smaller room at a better hour and for less money. Great deal, right? Well, not so fast. By the time Dan Deacon came on around 12:45, the place was a total disaster. Puke in every sink, girls crying on the sofas and drunk kids getting hauled out of there so frequently by security it started looking like a WTO protest. While this didn't directly affect the music, Girl Talk in particular, who then followed Deacon's hypnotizing set, relies so much on the behavior and interactivity of the crowd that it really became quite a chore to enjoy. Far be it from us to tell the majority of the crowd at a concert they were behaving poorly, but surely we weren't the only ones who were distracted and annoyed my the amateur antics on display. Then again, maybe we've just outgrown the shtick. (pic via JKART's flickr)
Gothamist's Week in Rock, Volume 7
Last Friday, crowds packed into Studio B to see the NYC return of laptop mashup extraordinaire Girl Talk deliver his most satisfying local set to date. 90 minutes of ADD jamz that kept the capacity crowd moving the entire time. This might sound odd, the best parts of a Girl Talk set are the mixes that don't work perfectly. They're few and far between, but sometimes two songs just don't work together. The remarkable feat is that Gillis is able to quickly realize this and seamlessly correct it right there. It's a reminder that he's not just pressing a button and letting the whole set roll, but is actually constructing these mashups on the fly. Nothing made this clearer than when after trying and failing to somehow successfully mix JT's 'My Love' with a variety of songs, finally hitting gold by matching it with the oh so timeless 'Whoop, There it is.' Ever so subtle, the trial and error made the end result that much more rewarding. Getting a peak inside how his head functions in real time gives an added sense of legitimacy to what is an already amazing performance. (Pic via Ben Shapiro's flickr)
Elsewhere in the ist-a-verse
Between fake terrorist alerts and scandals big and small, this just might be the Best Best of the -ists ever. We're exhausted just thinking about it.
