Just before 4 p.m., word came in over the newswire that there was "a person under the train" at East 77th Street and Lexington; soon after it was noted the person was DOA. Some witnesses say she was playing with kids on the uptown platform when someone pushed her towards the tracks, while others say she jumped. The site has some gruesome details as well, noting "part of the girl’s head and arm were visible between the platform and a door of a car toward the front of the train. He was to be arraigned in state court in Brooklyn on rape, sex abuse and other charges. The sex crimes allegedly began in 2005 and continued until last spring, after the girl turned 15, investigators tell the Associated Press. 16-Year-Old Confesses To Shooting That Caught Girl In Crossfire

A 16-year-old boy has confessed to the Monday afternoon shooting that left a Bronx girl in a medically-induced coma. Carvett Gentles, a sophomore at Bronx Leadership Academy who rarely attended class, had no criminal record before this week, and police believe that's why the .40-caliber pistol used in the shooting was passed to him, in a street version of "hot potato." The four other young men who were with him Monday afternoon all have extensive arrest records, and those boys—also members of a Bloods gang spin-off called "Gorilla Stone Blood"—passed the gun around until it ended up in Gentles's hands. more ›

4-Year-Old Girl Left Behind on Subway Platform

4-Year-Old Girl Left Behind on Subway Platform

A worker for a Queens daycare center was a little daycareless Friday when she left a four-year-old girl behind on a 42nd Street subway platform. Jailyn Howard and her twin sister were part of a group of children on a field trip to Manhattan, supervised by a lone employee of the Whitney Foundation, a daycare center run out of a house in Jamaica, Queens. According to one account, the worker, Roxanne Jack, was distracted by a fight between two of the children while herding them on board. But Jailyn's cousin, who was also on the field trip, tells CBS2 that Jack was preoccupied and rushing: "She was telling us to hurry up, hurry up. Because she has to be somewhere... All of a sudden she knows Jailyn is missing and she started just panicking." Fortunately, Jack and the kids got off at the next stop and came back to 42nd Street to find Jailyn in the care of police. CBS2 reports that the Whitney Foundation does not seem to be a licensed daycare center and "if that is the case," mom Janel Howard says her kids won't return there. Because it's okay to be negligent as long as you have a license! more ›

OMGGGGGG! Texting Teen Girl Falls Into Open Manhole

OMGGGGGG! Texting Teen Girl Falls Into Open Manhole

To paraphrase Mel Brooks, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when a Staten Island teen falls down an open manhole while text-messaging." 15-year-old Alexa Longueira was walking with a friend around 5 p.m. yesterday and was about to send a text when she felt the ground give way: "She literally just handed me the phone and I opened it [and] I felt this big drop. It was four or five feet, it was very painful. I kind of crawled out and the DEP guys came running and helped me. ... They were just, like, 'I'm sorry! I'm sorry!'" Longueira got some scrapes on her arms and back (pictured), but doctors are concerned about possible spine damage and want a follow-up MRI. A DEP spokesperson says workers left the manhole momentarily to retrieve cones from the truck and expressed "regret." But Alexa's mother is determined to sue the city, and argues that it doesn't matter whether Alexa was texting or not; the manhole shouldn't have been left open. She tells the Staten Island Advance that even though the sewer wasn't full, "Oh my God, it was putrid. One of her sneakers is still down there." more ›

Unknown Substance Found in Burger King Mac N' Cheese

Unknown Substance Found in Burger King Mac N' Cheese

A Long Island man who purchased a Burger King Mac N' Cheese meal for his 6-year-old daughter yesterday says there was "something disgusting in there." (Besides the macaroni and the cheese.) Phil Collura of Rockville Centre tells CBS 2 that after buying the food product for his child at the drive-through, she told him it "tasted funny." And at the bottom of the mac n' cheese cup was what looked like a crushed pill! The girl was taken to a hospital for observation, and Nassau County police say the forensic evidence bureau is analyzing the substance. A police source tells Newsday, "It is unknown at this time if the child ingested any part of the substance." Coming as this does on the heels of the Domino's employees' gross-out video, it's unsurprising the King went into crisis management mode quickly, issuing this statement last night: "Burger King Corp. and its franchisee is aware of this situation and is investigating the matter. As a precaution, the restaurant has removed the product," which is produced by Kraft. more ›

Bullied Student Finally Gets School Transfer After Injury

Bullied Student Finally Gets School Transfer After Injury

A 14-year-old honor student tells the NY Post her direct pleas to Schools Chancellor Joel Klein about her safety at her school were ignored—until she was injured. Kimselle Castanos, whose family also repeatedly asked for a transfer, gave Klein a letter detailing how she was "terrorized by a band of teens at the Foreign Language Academy of Global Studies," back in December. He asked her to e-mail him, which the 14-year-old did, sending a total of 25 e-mails (from 12/22: "I am scared about what they are going to do to me") but without reply. Last month, the bullies, who attend a special education school in the same building, found her in the cafeteria: "A girl yanked Kimselle's ponytail so hard she heard a crack in her neck." Kimselle was transferred to the Bronx Leadership Academy; the Department of Education says her family never provided documentation of the threat and that it had been in contact with them. But, Kimselle, who wears a neck brace and whose parents plan to sue, wonders, "I don't understand why it took me getting hurt." more ›

Brooklyn Teacher Caught in Child Sex Sting

26-year-old Brighton Beach high school teacher Alexander Kravitz was arrested this week in a Queens hotel room, where prosecutors say he hoped to make a porn video with a 14-year-old girl to whom he'd been sending salacious instant messages and graphic live webcam video of himself. But the girl did not exist—Kravitz had been communicating with an undercover detective for the last six weeks. According to 1010 Wins, he could get four years in jail if convicted of several charges. After being released on $75,000 bail, Kravitz angrily cursed reporters outside his mother's Queens home, where he resides. It's also where detectives found his porno stash, which police say included images of sex with children ranging from in age from 13 to infants. Kravitz's mother Katherine told the Daily News, "I don't believe any of it. It has to be a mistake. I've never seen any young man work so hard. I don't see how he'd even have the time." more ›

And then, the next thing you know, my niece is bleeding." The stray bullet tore across her chest, chipping her collar bone, and passed dangerously close to her neck. According to the Daily News, she's in Kings County Hospital and expected to recover. Later that night in Far Rockaway, an 8-year-old boy was grazed in the head by a stray bullet as he got out of a car with his aunt around 10:30 p.m. The unidentified victim is in critical condition, and police are still looking for suspects in both shootings. more ›
