RIP: Taz, The Last 9/11 Search-And-Rescue Dog

A beloved member of the NYPD passed away: Taz, a 90-pound German shepherd who was the last of the active K-9 dogs who helped search the World Trade Center site after the September 11 attacks, died from cardiac arrest on Sunday. He was nine years old.

It's a doggy redux: Vice President-elect Joe Biden, who upset PETA and the Humane Society for buying a purebred German Shepherd puppy from a breeder, tells ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that he's also going to get a dog from the pound. Biden explained he and his wife wanted to two dogs, so they'd be companions, "We're going to have more than one puppy...I've had German Shepherds since I was a kid and I've trained them and shown them in the past. So I wanted a German Shepherd and we're going to get a pound dog, which my wife wants, who is hopefully a Golden [Retriever]." Thrilled, PETA is sending the Bidens and their dogs some presents, like soy pig ears and "coupons that he can give the pup that are good for tummy rubs and long walks." Biden also told Stephanopoulos, "The economy is in much worse shape than we thought it was in. There is no short run other than keeping the economy from absolutely tanking." You can see the interview tomorrow morning on This Week.

Vice President-elect Joe Biden may have picked up a German shepherd puppy, partially sating the public's desire to know what kind of pets the incoming administration will have, but even a cute dog can be controversial. PETA is upset because the puppy apparently came from an animal breeder...and "If it weren't bad enough that Biden chose to buy from a breeder, we are now trying to confirm the accuracy of a report that was sent to us alleging that he bought his dog from a known puppy mill operator!" The Humane Society is also upset Biden bought a dog from a breeder "since he has been a leader on animal-protection issues and has championed a number of important animal-welfare reforms in the Senate," but Biden's spokesperson said, "He is an advocate for rescuing animals, as shown by his rescue of the Biden's current cat, Daisy, from a local shelter."

The MTA is refreshing its campaign to remind mass transit riders to "See Something, Say Something" with some new print and television spots. The work acknowledges that the MTA and/or the police received 1,944 tips in 2006 (a total of 9,000 calls were made to 888-NYC-SAFE). MTA Executive Director and CEO Elliot G. Sander said, "We are proud that our customers play such an active role in keeping the system safe, and I am not surprised that the campaign has been copied around the world, from Chicago to Amsterdam. Keeping our customers safe remains the MTA's top priority."

A three year old German Shepherd dog on the NYPD's K-9 unit was seriously injured when he was literally sniffing out a suspect. Ranger and his handler, Police Officer Neal Campbell, were looking for Ivan Boston, a felon who was suspected of violating his parole. They entered Boston's apartment, and the floor was filled with broken dishes and glass. Boston refused to appear, so Ranger went into a bedroom by himself. Boston had been hiding under a mattress and Ranger found him, but cut his left foreleg on a mirror in the process. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "[The police dogs] go by themselves into dangerous situations. That's why we use them - to protect our other officers."

The Empire State has a state flower (the Rose), a state insect (the ladybug), a state tree (Acer saccharum - the Sugar Maple), a state gem (the Garnet), a state beverage (milk), a state fish (the Brook Trout), a state shell (the Bay Scallop)... for goodness sake we even have a state muffin (the Apple Muffin)! So why not a state dog?

A West Side woman walking her dog in Central Park was assaulted by an attacker until her dog bit him. The attacker, who exposed himself then tried to grope the woman, encountered the woman at 102nd and East Drive, near the ravine where the Central Park jogger was attacked. The woman's 60 pound dog "took a gash" out of the attacker, leaving much blood on the path; the dog is being treated as evidence, since he has blood and skin fibers from the suspect.
