What are the chances? Matt Murphy, a Queens-native and Mets fan, was on his way to Australia when he bought a ticket to last night's Giants-Nationals game at AT&T Park in San Francisco for a chance to watch history. He didn't just watch history, he happened to catch it. Or grab it, at least. Murphy, wearing a Mets jersey and t-shirt, and a buddy (wearing Yankees gear) bought a pair of tickets from a scalper before yesterday's game while on their one-day layover to Australia. As an aside: we've never understood the allure of attending a game wearing apparel of a team that isn't actually playing in that game.

If you want to watch Lance Armtrong race in the Tour de France, you either have to be in France or have the Outdoor Life Network. Lucky for those people around Times Square, you can watch the race live. George Vecsey points out that they are broadcasting it on the large screen until 11:30 at 44th and Broadway. Armstrong is going last and is scheduled to start at 10:58.
This weekend looks to be a rather boring for the New York region. The Mets and Yankees are both out of town playing teams in Florida. There is no hockey, no baketball, no nothing. George Vecsey pointed this travesty out yesterday and Gothamist couldn't agree more. When was the last time there were no local sports this weekend? What happened to seeing scores of Navy men and women in the stands of Shea or Yankee Stadium? Fleet week just doesn't seem right without that picture.
Is there only one rivalry left in baseball? George Vecsey thinks so (for the record, Gothamist thinks there are at least two rivalries in baseball). Vecsey contends that the only rivalry that is worth watching is the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry and to an extent, parts of his article are true. There is tremendous buzz around the two teams this year, with each team making off-season moves. Then there are the Mets, who Vecsey says are serving "leftovers" and have "no buzz" (has he been reading Whatevs?). Gothamist wonders if the addition of Kazuo Matsui and the play of Jose Reyes can cause excitement in Vecsey. Even we weren't so down on the Mets in our baseball preview.
It's all about Baltimore lately. If it's not the Times' Bryan Miller looking at Baltimore area restaurants, then it's another critical rave (and query: Why aren't more people watching?) for HBO's Baltimore-set drama, The Wire. Or it's the Yankees sweeping the Orioles (George Vecsey gives a little Baltimore local color in his piece about how Yankees fans worry and worry and worry). Gothamist knows one Baltimore blogger, and that's eebmore, who has noticed that even the stoop sales in Baltimore are suspiciously New York-like: Residents are trying to flog their wares Brooklyn style.
