Both ex-con Benny Geritano and Lucali's Pizza owner Mark Iacono have been charged with assault after a knife fight on Friday left them both in the hospital, and right now neither of them are speaking to police about how the fight started. One possibility is that Geritano, an associate of the Genovese mob, was trying to make Iacono pay up. “One motive being looked at is the possibility he was trying to shake down the owner for a slice of the business,” one official told the Times.
Cops Suspect Mob Shakedown In Lucali Owner's Stabbing
Nearly 130 Arrested In FBI's Biggest Mafia Bust EVER
Federal agents and members of local law enforcement agencies were very busy this morning, as they arrested almost 130 organized crime members in New York City and other cities. The FBI says it was the "largest nationally coordinated organized crime takedown in the Bureau’s history," with members of "New York’s infamous Five Families—the Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and Luchese crime organizations—rounded up along with members of the New Jersery-based DeCavalcante family and New England Mafia to face charges including murder, drug trafficking, arson, loan sharking, illegal gambling, witness tampering, labor racketeering, and extortion."
Mafia "Super Rat" Sent Into Witness Protection
Ex-mobster Salvatore Vitale, the former Bonanno crime family underboss who became one of the most significant government informers in U.S. mafia history, was sentenced to time served and shipped off to the witness protection program today. "Good Lookin Sal," 62, had previously admitted to participating in 11 murders, along with a host of other crimes such as extortion and gambling. But according to Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis, “Quite simply, Vitale has likely been the most important cooperator in the history of law enforcement efforts to prosecute the Mafia."
Genovese Mobster Indicted For Whacking Rat
A reputed former boss of the Genovese crime family was indicted in Manhattan federal court today on charges of racketeering, including the murder of another former mobster. Arthur Nigro, also known as "short guy" and "little guy," is currently in jail for extortion charges, but could face the death penalty if he's found guilty in the death of Adolfo "Big Al" Bruno, who was shot in 2003. Previously, a Genovese family associate Frankie Rouche pleaded guilty to being the "triggerman" in the whacking, and claimed it was because Bruno was not "sending sufficient tribute payments to New York." But it was revealed in today's indictment that Bruno was actually in communication with investigators. We wonder if anyone will be getting any strongly worded letters about gonads over this.
Gambino Family Goes Down in Feds' Mafia Sweep
Sixty-two men associated with the Gambino, Genovese and Bonanno crime families were arrested yesterday in a federal, state and local coordinated sweep in the New York region. A number of Gambino-related arrests were also made in Italy, and authorities have described this as the biggest mob bust in decades. Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell said, "Our goal is and always has been simple: to dismantle the Gambino organized-crime family in a coordinated and consistent fashion."
Feds Round Up Mobsters All Over NYC
This morning, federal agents have arrested over 50 members of the Gambino, Genovese and Bonanno crime families in New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island. Authorities are calling this the "biggest mafia bust in more than 20 years."
