The Bronx is Up, With Monkeys in Town

The Post captures a great photo of Lopez, looking forlorn, wearing a Von Dutch hat. He was distraught, calling them his "kids," "Could you imagine if someone came into your apartment and took everything you loved and cared for? Some vengeful, hateful person did this to me." Lopez: Did you break up with anyone lately? Annoy a neighbor with your youthful, Generation X ways? Animal control also seized Lopez's pet tarantula (no name given), which is also against the law to own as a pet, but he still has a Great Dane and some fish. And if anyone knows Orlando Lopez, Gothamist wants Andrew Krucoff to interview him for the Young Manhattanite Interview. more ›

McJob or McInsult

McJob or McInsult

McDonald's can't take some of the "Mc"-ing of America, as they are complaining about a new defintion in Merriam-Webster's: McJob defined as "a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement." Of course, McDonald's CEO, Jim Cantalupo, says the definiton insults the millions who work in the restuarant industry and wants Merriam-Webster's to have a more flattering definition; M-W says the definition is accurate and appropriate. Note to McDonald's: Oh, come on - if the definition didn't hold true, you wouldn't have the turnover problems you and other fast food restaurants do; go back to claiming your food is healthy. more ›

How to sell a car

How to sell a car

With all the attention on Kia Spectra "Boyfriend" post, or more specifically, the combination of the blond girl, the Kia Spectra, a succession of tools/boyfriends, the strums of "Genius of Love," and a dog, made me think about how some car companies truly understand how to attack their Generation X or later constituents. Of course, this only works when the advertising is good. The standout example of this is of course Volkswagen. Their site has a special area dedicated to their advertising, complete with names of the musical artists on their commercials. It'll take a year of great sales to get Kia to do the same, I think. My favorite car commercial campaign of late, though, is BMW's wildly ambitious, possibly ineffective but undeniably gorgeous BMW Films' The Hire series, starring Clive Owen. It's unfair to judge these commercials against others, since they are more exercises in art, rather than explicitly trying to sell the car...they aren't really commercials, I guess, but gifts from BMW to film geeks. My two favorites: Ang Lee's Chosen and Joe Carnahan's Ticker. Thank you, BMW. more ›
