Judge: Stop Being Nice To Girls on Probation

Family Court Judge John Hunt is accusing the city's Probation Department of gender bias, saying they routinely spare teenage girls from serving prison time even if they've committed the same violent crimes as boys. He cited the example of Stephen C. and Jennifer S., both teens who beat up a boy before stealing his iPod. However, the Probation Department suggested Stephen be put on supervised probation while Jennifer should have her case eventually dismissed. Hunt said, "The court could find no cogent reason why Jennifer S. should be treated differently than her accomplice." Except she is made of sugar, spice and everything nice. more ›

Goldman Sachs Gives Massive Donation As Lawsuit Looms

Goldman Sachs, the "vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity," gave its largest donation ever to the Harlem Children’s Zone yesterday. Goldman Sachs Gives, a fund supported by the investment company and its partners, gave $20 million to the charter school operators, toward the creation of a new school and community center at Harlem’s St. Nicholas Houses. Their massive donation (some perspective: $20 million is approximately what Goldman earns in 1/2 a day) comes on the heels of a major gender bias lawsuit, which the more cynical among us may say is convenient timing for such an announcement. more ›

B&H Photo Video Sued For Gender Bias

It is not a good week for businesses ending in "&H" — first the H&H Bagel owner was indicted on tax fraud, and now word is getting out that the Hasidic-run B&H Photo Video is being sued to the tune of $8 million in a gender bias discrimination lawsuit. According to the NY Times, the two unrelated cases were announced just 30 minutes apart yesterday. more ›
