The 15th Anniversary of the Gen Art Film Festival kicks off tomorrow night at the Ziegfeld Theatre with Josh Radnor’s ("How I Met Your Mother") writing/directing debut happythankyoumoreplease, which was shot here in New York and won the Sundance Audience Award. Spoiler? The movie "focuses on several 20-something relationships in the city." Other screenings during the week-long indie festival include Elektra Luxx, about a former adult film actress as she shifts her moves from the bedroom to the classroom; Tanner Hall, "a coming-of-age tale steeped in secrecy, desire and adolescent complexity" and set in a New England all-girls boarding school, and Mercy, which features James Caan and Dylan McDermott in a story about "a successful young romance novelist who doesn't believe in love—or so he thinks. When he meets a beautiful and mysterious book critic named Mercy, his theories are put to the test." Drama button!
Gen Art Film (And Party) Festival Turns 15 Tomorrow
TriBeCa: Rich Zipcode, Expensive Film Fest Tickets
You may have noticed that many tickets for the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival are $18, which indieWIRE notes is a 50% jump. The TFF says, "In an effort to continue to provide the best possible experience, we have raised our prices, which have until now been lower than most other festivals." A spokeswoman tells the Post that the festival must spend "a significant amount of money to outfit all theaters it uses with digital projection equipment, and to fly in top-tier talent for personal appearances at screening Q&A's." Plus, people who live in the 'hood can get discounts.
10th Annual Gen Art Film Festival
Gen Art is well underway with its decadent parties and premieres. The good news is there are still five more nights of revelry. What makes Gen Art unique is that it only screens seven features and seven shorts, while other fests screen tens of hundreds of films. And each night’s film is followed by an afterparty at some hot spot with 2-hour open bar. Also unlike other festivals, this one is more audience-driven and accessible.
Ignite!
One thing on our radar for this week is Gen Art's combustible blow out soiree this Thursday. Firing up over at the Puck Building (493 Lafayette), Ignite! expects to draw a crowd of 1,000 for viewing of short films, a multimedia art exhibit curated by Trong Nguyen, and live performances by Flambeaux, the P-Cult and Showgirl of the Universe Ami Goodheart & the Coquettes. The Scratch Academy crew will also be on hand to teach some dj spinning techniques.
