Is "Artisanal" Ice Cream Worth the Hype?

Is "Artisanal" Ice Cream Worth the Hype?

Another award to add to the city's shelf: According to the Times, Manhattan is most likely the home of America's most expensive ice cream. At their two locations, Grom serves a "small" cup of their artisanal gelato for $5.25, already up $.50 since they opened in 2007. (A sales rep says their small is "110-115 grams," which means a pound would be around $25, not $150 as the Gray Lady claims.) Their prices seem to be the high end of standard these days, as handmade, organic, horomone-free, sustainable, etc. ice cream becomes more and more popular. But the Times asks an important question, "Is there any good reason for ice cream—basically milk, sugar and eggs—to cost more per ounce than wild Atlantic smoked salmon or prime rib-eye?" more ›

The small sandwich menu at Bklyn Larder will change daily; salads and other prepared foods include chickpeas with tomato and olives, veal meatballs, and dressed sugar snap peas. more ›

The (Noiseless) Ice Cream Man is Coming

The (Noiseless) Ice Cream Man is Coming

As the weather warms and plenty of New Yorkers are driven to the brink of insanity by the incessant, nursery school-worthy jingles blaring from slow-going ice cream trucks, take solace in the news that several new ice cream carts—all w/o loudspeakers—will debut this weekend. These quiet heroes are our greatest hope for winning the jingle wars, and when all is scooped and done, the weasel will be popped once and for all and the turkey in the straw will stay that way— FOREVER. more ›

New York Magazine rounds up one of summer's sweetest treats -- the ice cream sandwich. Forget about the tasteless, mass-produced blocks from your childhood, we're talkin' high end sandwiches, with high end cookies (think Jacques Torres chocolate chunk) filled with rich gelato in a range of flavors. Try One Girl Cookies' version of a whoopie pie filled with il Laboratorio's ricotta gelato, the brownie with fromage-blanc gelato from Ruby et Violette, or pick your own flavor of Otto's sublime gelato and tuck it into a fluffy brioche. more ›
