Open Wide for [REDACTED*] at Jones Wood Foundry

Open Wide for [REDACTED*] at Jones Wood Foundry

Good news for everybody who loves Faggots: The classic British dish, akin to a large meatball with a texture that straddles the line between meatloaf and blood sausage, is now on the menu at the new Upper East Side gastropub Jones Wood Foundry. We were not very familiar with Faggots the food—the word also refers to a bundle of sticks or, in England, cigarettes—but once we started doing a little research on this delicacy, we got very excited to toss a few Faggots down our gaping throats. In 2003, the BBC covered the revival of what was then a forgotten British dish: more ›

Midweek Special: NYC Restaurant Review Roundup

Midweek Special: NYC Restaurant Review Roundup

"It’s Hogwarts for hipsters," writes the Times's Sam Sifton in his favorable review of The Breslin, a gastropub in the Ace Hotel that's operated by April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman, both of The Spotted Pig fame. Over multiple visits (including room service—nice work if you can get it!) Sifton is charmed by all the fatty comfort food like smoked pork belly "that’s been roasted to tender goo, for instance, over a drift of buttery mashed potatoes, with cabbage and bacon on the side"; and "the pig’s foot...a non-negotiable one-time order for those who eat feet." But then there are the delayed after-effects: "The Breslin is the sort of restaurant you end up thinking about a lot, not always pleasantly, staring up at the ceiling at 3 in the morning in cold sweat and mild panic... Excess can become wretched, and fast. It’s cool to hook up with the Breslin, especially if you’re lucky enough to sit in one of the semiprivate nooks near the open kitchen. But we should see other people. It would be death to be a regular there." more ›

New Restaurants On The Radar: Mari Vanna, Yerba Buena Perry, The Ainsworth

New Restaurants On The Radar: Mari Vanna, Yerba Buena Perry, The Ainsworth

Mari Vanna: The latest addition to New York's niche dining market this week comes to us all the way from Russia. Mari Vanna opened last Wednesday after a soft opening all through July, bringing authentic Russian cuisine and all the vodka you can stomach. Inspired by the mythical Mari Vanna (think Max Brenner, but with Borscht), the restaurant feels more like an immigrant kitchen, complete with tchotchke on the bookshelves and ottomans on the floor. And with the winter months approaching, Mari Vanna offers Russian classics like Blinis and Beef Stroganoff on homey yet extravagant china and linens, and gives you the opportunity to wash down that stew with over 70 types of vodka, including a couple dozen imported bottles from Russia. The emphasis, however, is on their in-house infused vodkas, with flavors like Oats & Honey and Dill & Garlic. No word yet on if those flavors are actually successful. 41 E 20th St; (212)-777-1955 more ›

New Restaurants on the Radar: reBar, Kif, Warren 77

reBar: This spacious bar/restaurant isn't new, but the chef and the menu are, so it's worth a mention for those making dinner plans in somewhat dining-deprived DUMBO. Self-described hippie owner Jason Stevens, who quit his job trading mortgage-backed securities at Merrill Lynch just before the crash, opened reBar in December 2006 in an old tea warehouse dating back the later 19th century. With an elegantly weathered, post-industrial design by the same guy who did the Zipper Factory Theater (RIP), the place has become a favorite watering hole for the locals. ($2 pints from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.!) more ›
