Once upon a time in lower Manhattan (specifically the NoHo/Bowery strip) was as littered with gas stations as it now is with expensive restaurants, but as the latter moved in the former have been drying up one by one. And now one of the last gas stations standing, the BP at Lafayette and Houston, is reportedly looking into giving up the ghost and becoming another commercial "loft" developement. Is it strange that we find ourselves mourning the loss of gas stations?

Beware the Fake Gas Prices
For those of you hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, be on the alert for gas stations "illegally overcharging" or advertising fake low prices. The Post reports that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is warning drivers about this practice, "Our investigation revealed that New York City is rife with gas stations that engage in deceptive practices where they display one price as a way to lure customers - and then charge them more at the pump." For instance, some stations' low prices are only for cash transactions (not that they specify that) and drivers using credit cards must pay surcharges. The Post has a graphic of some area gas stations pulling the bait-and-switch.
The Psychology of Getting Soaked at the Pump
A penny here, a penny there, pretty soon it adds up to driving right by a gas station because they've crossed a psychological barrier of asking more than four bucks for a gallon of gas. Area stations are trying hard to hold the line at $3.99 a gallon to keep from scaring the bejeezus out of drivers with the facts, which is that gasoline is the most expensive it's been since the invention of the internal combustion engine.
