After learning that the BP gas station on Houston Street had the potential to turn into a pricey condo development, we had what we believed would be our last gas fight, and mourned the loss of another neighborhood petrol purveyor. Turns out we should raise a glass of super unleaded to the Landmark's Preservation Commission: the gas station is part of a historic district!
SoHo BP Gas Station Will Remain "Historic," For Now
Houston St. BP Station On The Way Out, Condos On The Way In?
Once upon a time in lower Manhattan (specifically the NoHo/Bowery strip) was as littered with gas stations as it now is with expensive restaurants, but as the latter moved in the former have been drying up one by one. And now one of the last gas stations standing, the BP at Lafayette and Houston, is reportedly looking into giving up the ghost and becoming another commercial "loft" developement. Is it strange that we find ourselves mourning the loss of gas stations?
Galling Gas Prices Give Drivers Agita
Cyclists may feel they've been getting hounded more than ever in NYC lately, but there's one sweet perk to the two-wheeled life no one can take away from them: tires don't run on gasoline. And with average gas prices now reaching above $4 a gallon, that's a real reason for city drivers to bitch: "It's absolutely too much. It really hurts," Brooklyn Heights resident Chiqui Matthews told the Post. Of course, Matthews probably doesn't need a gas-guzzling Range Rover in the city, but who are we to point out the obvious.
Driver Flees Gas Station Without Paying, Dragging Attendant
A gas station attendant was dragged by a car when its driver fled. According to MyFoxNy, "Security camera video shows the employee holding onto the side of a Nissan Maxima, desperately trying to stop the driver. That is because the driver apparently had pumped $20 worth of gas and then drove off without paying." The incident occurred at a Fort Lee, NJ Lukoil station near the George Washington Bridge.
NY Gas Station Sells Cheap Smokes From Ice Cream Truck On CT Side Of Property
We all know that cigarettes are very expensive in New York, thanks to another $1.60 state tax imposed last year, which prompts some smokers to head to cheaper pastures. One gas station on the border of New York and Connecticut has now taken an ingenious approach: Put an ice cream truck selling smokes on the Connecticut part of its property.
Bronx Gas Station Attendant Killed In Botched Robbery
One gas station attendant was killed and another was injured last night in the Bronx during a botched robbery. Police say that the suspect entered the Shell station in Baychester, just off the New England Thruway, around 11:45 p.m. He entered the snack shop and picked up a candy bar, then got into a dispute with the two attendants. A police source told the News, "he pulled out a gun and demanded money and for some reason the attendants put up a struggle." Lamine Diop, 35, was struck three times in the leg and killed; Papa Ly, 37, was struck twice, but is currently in stable condition. The perp escaped empty-handed, possibly in a white BMW.
Two Arrested For Killing Gas Station Attendant
After he and an accomplice were busted for robbing the same Chinese restaurant three times in four days, police have arrested two clearly brilliant men for the murder of Queens gas station attendant Nadeem Khan. Christopher Roberts, 21, was charged with second degree murder while his accomplice, Maurice Echols, 21, was charged with robbery. However, Roberts says Echols was the one who pulled the trigger.
Some Clarification on Tonight's BP Protest (BYO "Oil"!)
Protest organizers are expecting a sizable turnout at tonight's demonstration at the BP station on Houston Street, and so a major NYPD presence is inevitable as well. (And after the protest, at 7 p.m., there's Critical Mass, woot!) This morning Code Pink sent out a handy info sheet for those planning on attending. They also clarified that they don't intend to literally "occupy" BP, just converge at the gas station covered in "oil" to send a message.
Little Girl Abandoned in Gas Station Bathroom
Delaware police have tentatively ID'd a little girl found Sunday in a men's bathroom stall at a Shell station in Delaware. They believe she's about 2 years old and that she comes from New York or New Jersey, but haven't released other details. According to the Daily News, the child's hair was "pulled up on top of her head, and she was wearing a puffy tan winter coat over a purple shirt with small flowers printed on it. She also was wearing blue jeans with pink, white and purple sneakers with purple laces and white ankle socks." The AP says she's been placed in foster care family while police search for her family.
Gas Station Manager Fights Thief, Traps Him Until Cops Arrive
A Crown Heights gas station manager fended off a crook on Tuesday and locked him inside his Utica Avenue convenience store until police showed up. At around 2 pm, Nick Ali was inside his Gulf station's glass-enclosed cashier's booth when he spotted a customer tossing cell phone chargers into a Burberry bag, according to the Daily News. "I came out of the booth. Usually that's a bad idea," said Ali, who purportedly told the perp: "I'm busting my a-- here 18 hours a day so you can rob me?"
Video: Fearless Gas Station Clerk Grabs Shotgun From Robber
This video is the greatest demonstration of someone "flipping it" on an adversary that we've seen in some time. Long Island convenience store and gas-station clerk Mustapha Yakupoglu was closing up at midnight Wednesday night when two masked men burst in and pointed a shotgun at his neck, demanding money. But Yakupoglu, who's been robbed twice before, wasn't having it. Check out this deft maneuver, caught by a surveillance camera:
Courtney Love Plays Gas Station
Hey, smoking at gas stations is dangerous! Last night Courtney Love performed for a crowd of around 1,000 at Alexander Wang's fashion week after party, which took place the Mobil Gas Station on 10th Avenue, of course. Thanks to WWD and Justin Rocket's Twitterering, we know that there was also free candy inside the gas station and "Pixie Geldof and Devon Aoki stocked up on Nerds" (hipster elite, they're just like us!). Soon after, Love was back to Twittering herself, saying, "we had way fun tonight for Alexander (Wang) sorry we mangled 'Unsatisfied' westerberg but they were so fashionista they didnt know dick." Sorry, but we sort of love her for that.
Staten Island Gang Bias Attack Leaves Man Beaten Bloody
A brutal beating on Staten Island last month is being called a bias attack. Police are searching for three suspects who pummeled a 38-year-old Hispanic man with baseball bats. The confrontation began when the victim and a white man (pictured from surveillance video) had a confrontation at a BP Amoco station in Bulls Head around 4:30 a.m. on June 17th, the victim being harassed with what cops call "anti-ethnic remarks." The man yelling the remarks then got into a car with two other white males, who followed the victim, got out of the car and according to a neighbor "were cracking the hell out of him with bats." The neighbor also said he was surprised the victim lived, that there was so much blood he later thought the sidewalk was covered in red paint. Another neighbor told WCBS 2, "It's worse than a regular crime because anyone can be a victim. I can see myself in that situation, just walking down the street to go across to get a doughnut." The victim is recovering after suffering serious head wounds.
Brooklyn Filling Station Has Kosher Food, Gas
The Post has discovered Rio gas station in Borough Park, which for years now has been a big hit in the with Hasidic Jews, who pull in for a blessed fill up and a wide variety of kosher delicacies. Rio's owner bought the station in 2005, and turned the garage bay into the Heimeshe Coffee Shop, stocking it with pastries from Ostrovitsky's, a well-known kosher bakery in Midwood. The gas station, located by the BQE on 14th Avenue and 38th Street, also serves house-made gefilte fish and shakshuka, a Middle Eastern medley of fried eggs and tomato sauce, among other things. Devoted and devout customer Yossi Rubinfeld tells the tabloid, "You'll have a guy who comes Thursday night. He can pop in and get himself a good cholent, a cold drink, and be on his way." And customer Esti Babiov wonders, "Where else can you fill up your car and get kosher heimish [home-like] food while you're waiting?" For those keeping track, there used to be another kosher gas station in Crown Heights, but that's no longer owned by Jews.
Gas Station Attendant Killed on Staten Island
Last night, an attendant at a gas station in the Tompkinsvile section of Staten Island was fatally shot in the back around 9 p.m. Mohammed Ishfaq Ahmed, 50, managed to stumble into the convenience store, and the Staten Island Advance reports, "it appears that no one saw the shooting, and as of early today, police had no motive, no suspects and hadn't recovered any spent bullet shells." A co-worker told WCBS 2, "He never bothered anybody. He was a good guy. It was a botched robbery," while a neighbor said, "The neighborhood is no good. From the Jersey Street, there has always been problems...that's why I lock the door all the time." The Advance also notes how, in 1997, a a 20-year-old man was shot to death at the same gas station.
NYC Gas Prices Still High
While oil prices have hit a three-month low, gas prices in the NYC-area are still expensive as gas prices in other parts of the country dip below the $4 level. WCBS 2 tried to find out why, and the AAA New York's Robert Sinclair said, "We saw in the second quarter that Exxon Mobil made nearly $12 billion in profits, so certainly there's some profit built into this and even at the refinery level, the distributor level, they're making money and maybe the retailer is trying to break off a little bit for themselves as well." Other possible factors: The fact that NY drivers need their gas and the state's eight gas taxes (about 70 cents/gallon).
The Numbers "4" and "5" Are in Demand
A sad but natural phenomenon is occurring at some gas stations: They are running out of plastic numbers to display gas prices--specifically, the number 4, thanks to the budget-busting high gas prices. One station manager told the Times he's still waiting for his 4's to come in (that's why he's handwritten them), not to mention the 5's for the diesel pump. The city's Department of Consumer Affairs and State Department of Agriculture and Markets say the handwritten or photocopied numbers are okay, as they understand the marketplace has been changing very quickly.
