Building Evacuated in Gas Leak Confusion

A tipster from 119 West 23rd Street just wrote in saying the building was evacuated earlier this afternoon for over in hour in what was originally thought to be a gas leak. She writes: "So all us employees at Tekserve (and the offices above) were just evacuated for about an hour after a stinky rotten egg smell permeated the building. Thought it might be a gas leak, but it turns out that someone at the salon on one of the upper floors poured some heavy-duty professional-grade drain cleaner in the pipes. Incorrectly." Woops. The fumes aren't dangerous, but Sarah Lewitinn (aka Ultragrrrl) was also in the building at the time and panic-Twittered about some of the side effects: "My lips feel numb and weird as do my legs. Lightheaded. Not cool. TELL PPL THERE'S A GASLEAK!" UPDATE: Lewitinn says several people in the building are sick, and worries that it may have been something harmful leaking. And given that Con Ed might be involved, she may have reason to be!

Outrage At Con Ed Mounts Over Fatal Queens House Explosion

With the fatal gas leak which claimed a woman's life when her house exploded, City Council Eric Gioia called for Con Ed CEO Kevin Burke to step down, "Homes and streets should not be exploding - period. Across the five boroughs New Yorkers are left to wonder, 'Who's next?'... How many pepole have to lose their life before Con Edison changes their procedures?"

Con Ed Criticized For Gas Leak That Caused Fatal Explosion

The family of the woman who was killed when their house in Floral Park Queens exploded, apparently from a gas leak, visited the site of their leveled house. Dindial Boodram, whose wife Ghanwatti died, told the Daily News, "I want answers, I need answers" about how Con Ed handled reports for a leak—utility workers had been on the scene for 90 minutes and never evacuated residents in spite of high gas levels from a street manhole.

1 Dead In Queens House Explosion; Gas Leak Suspected

Firefighters found a woman's body under the rubble of a Floral Park house on 260th Street that exploded yesterday afternoon. The Daily News reports the body was discovered four hours after the 4:50 p.m. explosion: "Her husband was at work and her three kids were in an after-school program." The woman's husband, Dindail Boobram, told the NY Times that his wife didn't show up to pick up the kids.

Queens House Explodes; 2 Injured

A home on 260th Street in the Floral Park section of Queens exploded this afternoon. Currently, it is a third alarm situation with over 100 firefighters responding to the fire, which has spread to other homes. WCBS 2 reports, "Officials believe the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak. CBS 2 has learned that Con Edison officials had been called to the area earlier Friday after reports of gas fumes coming out of the sewers." So far, reports say two people were injured and that the house was destroyed.

The Daily News reports that Con Ed will give $3.75 million to the family of a 69-year-old woman who died after a gas explosion last year. Kunta Oza was burned over 90% of her body when a gas leak caused an explosion in Sunnyside, Queens. Though neighbors had called about the gas smell, Con Ed and the FDNY couldn't find the leak and no one was evacuated. The News reports, "The gas main cracked because of corrosion and wear and tear, state regulators found, even though it was not on Con Ed's priority list for replacement." Apparently cast iron pipes are supposed to be replaced (at least that's what federal safety experts say), but Con Ed's rate of replacing its 2,500 miles "of cast-iron pipe" is "just 40 miles a year, said City Councilman Eric Gioia.
