A lack of timely hitting and a devastating Detroit bullpen combined to defeat the Yankees 4-3 on Thursday. New York had plenty of opportunities against Justin Verlander, pounding seven hits and drawing four walks over the first five-plus innings, but apart from Johnny Damon’s three-run homer, they could not deliver the big blow.

The fans love it, the managers hate it and the players are mostly ambivalent; it’s the return of the Subway Series. One way or another Mets’ or Yankees’ fans will be able to claim bragging rights on Monday... or at least until the two teams meet again in July.

The Yankees used timely hitting and solid pitching to beat the Angels 3-2 Sunday night knotting their series at two games apiece. The decisive Game Five will be played tonight at 8pm.

The Angels used some timely hitting and some poor defense by the Yankees to even their best-of-five ALDS series with a 5-3 victory Wednesday night. Orlando Cabrera delivered the key hit, a two-run single in the seventh inning that give the Angels the lead for good. Bengie Molina added two hits and a home run in the eighth.
