The G train may just be a mere puppet under the control of the MTA, but this is probably what it would say to you if its transit Svengali could figure out how to stick a hand up its caboose and make it talk. Straphangers, the G train will now "show up if and when we feel like it." (Oh and P.S., the transit overlords are still raising fares.) [via @rcwellington]
Service Alert: The G Train Doesn't Care About You
Weekend Subway Work Canceled, Service Resumes As "Usual"
After no small degree of dread was endured by those who rely on the G and F to get around Brooklyn, the big snow storm has come through with a reprieve this weekend. The MTA has announced that "due to inclement weather, all weekend subway work has been canceled. All lines will operate according to the usual weekend schedule." Shuttle buses were to have replaced the F train between Jay Street and Church Avenue, and the G line was to have been divided up into trains, single-track shuttle trains, and the F shuttle buses. But the best laid schemes of rats and MTA went askew, thanks to the snowacane. Even the 7 train's running between Manhattan and Long Island City! Oh MTA, you're going to spoil us!
G Train Entirely Suspended for Four Straight Weekends
Gee, this sucks: Starting, um, tomorrow, the G train will be suspended on four consecutive weekends, from 10:30 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday, during January 15-18, January 22-25, January 29-February 1 and February 5-8. But don't despair, there will be free shuttle buses! Weeee! And if you're stuck in Long Island City or Greenpoint (there are worse fates) you've also got the fancy new B62 bus at your service. But why mercilessly yank the G now, in the dead of winter, MTA?
Another Reason to Avoid the G
A 28-year old man was charged with public lewdness on October 9th after masturbating on the G train at 10:30 a.m. The Brooklyn Paper reports that cops responded to calls from horrified mid-morning commuters at the Smith-Ninth Street station, after spotting him “naked with an erect penis out on public view."
Checking in On the Off "Brodaway"
It seems the MTA/NYC Transit crew quietly fixed the "Brodaway" typo we spotted recently. Someone at SubChat wrote that as of this past Monday the misspelled tile sign was "corrected by using a thermal tile marking device by covering the squares in black (I did see the original lettered outline underneath), then place each a white 'A' and 'D' over it, but with a slightly bolder font, in what is now in their proper setting." Sounds like a quick, inexpensive fix (albeit more inconsistent font work), but it didn't stick! Another SubChat post from yesterday declares it is back to "Brodaway" and suggests the MTA "leave things alone so that the sign can remain as part of the lore (and lure) of the subway."
Mock Funeral for the G Train
Let's face it, the G train has long been ignored by the MTA (a lot of the typos can even be found on that line), so it's not all that surprising that they've proposed to cut back its service (no more G to Queens on evenings and weekends; PDF of proposed changes). This morning the line became one of many to be eulogized at a mock funeral service (previously straphangers paid their respects to the Z train, the M and the R).
