Day 2 Of Osama Bin Laden Newspaper Front Pages

It's day two of Osama bin Laden's death dominating newspaper front pages. Yesterday, it was the "Rot In Hell"/"He's Dead"/"Justice is Done" headlines. Today, the main focus is on the U.S. Special Forces operation to take out the Al Qaeda leader: The Daily News says, "How We Nailed Him" while the Post blares, "How We Did It!" The NY Times and Washington Post offer diagrams of Bin Laden's compound. Newsday focuses on the time for the raid, while the Star-Ledger reflects on "Pride and Pain." more ›

Osama Bin Laden Is Dead: Newspaper Front Pages

Osama bin Laden's death made the front page of American newspapers, but many East Coast publications had to redo their front pages and sections after President Obama made his late-night address. The NY Times' Brian Stelter Tweeted, "NYT front page is being ripped up and reproduced right now. Six-column, two-row headline," and then the Daily News' Meena Hartenstein Tweeted to him, "We just blew out the first 10 pages." The News went with "ROT IN HELL" while the NY Times' headine ended up being, "BIN LADEN KILLED BY U.S. FORCES IN PAKISTAN, OBAMA SAYS, DECLARING JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE." The NY Post said, "GOT HIM," Newsday settled with "DEAD" and the Star-Ledger referenced Obama's address, "Justice has been done." more ›

More Moon Nostalgia in Today's Times

More Moon Nostalgia in Today's Times

Yesterday we got to watch in "real time" the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon, down to the second it was aired when covered by Walter Cronkite. Today the NY Times has included a four page insert in the paper, featuring the big headline of July 21st, 1969, just as it was printed 40 years ago. Wanna save some trees? Read the original story here; it's still probably one of the most exciting ledes of all time: "Men have landed and walked on the moon." more ›

Covering the Lower East Side Murder

Covering the Lower East Side Murder

After wondering about the intense (some might say excessive) coverage of Nicole duFresne's murder on the Lower East Side - and being party to it - Gothamist is glad that the Village Voice Jarrett Murphy investigated the local reporting on it. Murphy's article, "A Murder Made For the Front Page," looks at how the NY Times, Daily News, and Newsday covered the story, amid questions whether it became a race story (white woman killed by black teen). Of course, the papers say this story would have been covered no matter what race the victim was, given that the murder happened in an "interesting neighborhood" and had the "aspiring-success" angle. However, how readers perceive the information is another issue, and Murphy makes a point of saying that the racial dynamic should have been addressed. more ›

Mourning Kerry

Mourning Kerry

About 49% of the population is still reeling from Senator Kerry's concession. Gothamist's own Doug Gordon (also of Planet Gordon) and his wife are in Boston, and were captured for the world to see on BBC News Front Page. He tells us, "All I can say is that there is nothing quieter than the sound of 10,000 people not saying a word." And we expect the Secret Service and FBI to be investigating many more street crimes of this nature. more ›
