A man was shot after he stabbed two people on a Midtown street. Either an off-duty police officer or plainclothes law enforcement officer is believed to have shot the man. Here's a tip we received:

I walked outside my building about an hour ago and saw tons of police activity. From what I hear a man went into Starbucks to obtain a knife unsuccessfully. Then went into another restaurant (not sure of the name) and obtained a knife. He proceeded to stab two people in between 34th & 35th St on 2nd ave. An off-duty police officer was present and shot the attacker.
It's unclear if the attacker is dead - he and the two victims were taken to Bellevue, where they are in surgery.

There are a couple construction-related accidents today. WNBC reports that a construction worker fell off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge around 1:38PM: "A retaining wall on the edge of a bridge roadway under construction had collapsed, but it was unclear if the worker had fallen from that area." The SI Advance reports that the worker is "believed to have fallen on the Brooklyn-side, landing on the ground near the entrance to Fort Hamilton Army Base." We're hearing that the BQE and Belt Parkways have heavy delays, and local streets in Bay Ridge are also getting congested. Update: A firefighter tells the AP the worker was on a wooden catwalk, off the lower span, when the "[concrete] Jersey barrier somehow fell over onto the catwalk, causing the worker to fall.''

WNBC 4's Jonathan Dient reports that the feds have arrested four men plotting to blow up a jet fuel pipeline at JFK Airport today. From WNBC 4:

Four people have been charged. One is in custody in New York. Three suspects are thought to be overseas.

As if former Mayor Rudy Giuliani were giving a perfect example of his shiny, accessible campaign demeanor, which is decidedly different from his mayoral behavior, none was better than the Tuesday confrontation between the presidential candidate and some protesters. You can see a video on WNBC 4 where a two people separately ask Giuliani why he let first responders go into the World Trade Center, if he knew that the towers would fall down. From WNBC:

Giuliani replied by saying, "I didn't realize the towers would collapse." He later added, "No one that I know of had any idea they would implode. That was a complete surprise."

Attention lawyers, investment bankers, tech-support personnel, and anyone else who is wirelessly tethered to their job and wondering why they haven't received an email in the last 12 hours: There's good news and bad news. The good news is that you haven't been fired and this is your firm's passive-aggressive way of letting you know. The bad news is that the Blackberry network experienced a system meltdown last night starting around 8 p.m. From WNBC:

NewsChannel4 has learned of a massive system failure affecting all blackberry users in the western hemisphere.

Yet another intriguing chapter in the life of former police commissioner Bernard Kerik: WNBC reports that he rejected a plea deal from the feds. The deal would have allowed Kerik to plead guilty to tax fraud and illegal eavesdropping - plus serve jail time - and in return, the feds would have dropped their criminal probe. And the probe includes quite a laundry list: "allegations of mortgage fraud, tax fraud, conspiracy to eavesdrop and making false statements on his application to become U.S. Homeland Security Secretary."

A couple comments on Gothamist Contribute noted some issues around East 3rd Street today.

- Any idea what happened at the Hell's Angel house on E. 3rd St? Police tape and detectives were around when I walked by earlier this morning.
