Last night, hard naturally occurring objects started falling from the atmosphere (sometimes accompanied by thunder), creating a bit of a mess and making New Yorkers wonder if it was thundersleet or thunderhail. It's a meteorological mystery!
Hail, Sleet, Freezing Rain, Or Graupel: No One Knows What The Hell Fell On NYC Last Night
Sloppy Saturday, Sunny Sunday
Enjoy the sunshine today for there's a classic weather battle shaping up that is going to make far a soggy Saturday. For this afternoon high pressure centered south of the city will give us abundant sun and a high in the mid 30s. The fun begins late tonight when a low pressure system begins to form east of the Carolinas. At that distance the best the storm will do is throw humid air over the high pressure system. That'll bring an inch or two of snow to the city proper overnight. If that's not enough snow for you places north of the city should get a few more inches.
Why This Ice Storm Is Not Shattering Our Will to Live
You couldn't ask for a better morning if you've been eager to try out those new ice skates you got for Christmas, or if you're feeling litigious and willing to take a spill outside a fancy building. Seriously, it's hip-breakin' weather out there—the sidewalks are covered by treacherous sheets of ice, and it's raining, and why even bother anymore? we're going to get through this trifling little ice storm, because we're hardcore New Yorkers with ice in our veins. Pro tip: If you've got good boots, you're better off walking in the crusty snow at the edge of the sidewalk, so you can actually get some traction. Just take it slow, and send your best ice storm photos to photos@gothamist.com or tag them "gothamist" on Flickr.
Schools Open, But Ice Storm Warning In Effect
The National Weather Service issued an Ice Storm Warning until 9 a.m., and New York City has announced that NYC public schools and government offices will be open today. However, the NYC Office of Emergency Management said, "All New Yorkers should exercise caution and allow extra time for travel. During the peak of the morning rush hour, roads and sidewalks may be slippery and dangerous."
OEM Issues Rush Hour Hazardous Travel Advisory
The MTA says subways and most of the bus lines are operating normally so far this morning, but the Office of Emergency Management has issued a rush hour Hazardous Travel Advisory urging motorists to take mass transit instead of driving. Don't let the lack of dramatic snow accumulation fool you; meteorologists predict that we are at the mercy of a two day marathon storm, which is expected to bring four inches of snow and sleet to parts of NYC by mid-morning. This will be followed by a thick coating of freezing rain in the afternoon and more snow and sleet late tonight, turning the city into a delicious creme brulee of wintery misery. A winter storm warning is in effect until Wednesday at 7 p.m. Happy February!
Big Ugly Storm Headed This Way
In case you were wondering, snow has been on the ground at the Central Park Zoo for thirty-six consecutive days now. The polar bears must be really happy! Given the forecast for more snow and cold weather, the snow cover should be around for at least another week if not longer. While there's plenty of sun to start the day today a cold air mass will limit how much melting can take place. Look for a high around the freezing mark as high clouds arrive this afternoon.
Ice Is On The Way, Be Careful!
As we mentioned earlier, we're about to get some some snow, but then it's going to change to rain and then into freezing rain. The National Weather Service issues a winter weather advisory earlier today, "FOR NYC & L.I. FROM 1AM TONIGHT THRU 1PM TUE. UP TO AN INCH OR TWO OF SNOW EXPECTED BEFORE PRECIP CHANGES TO SLEET & FREEZING RAIN IN THE MORNING & THEN PLAIN RAIN AROUND NOON." This means travel will be tricky.
Freezing Rain for Tuesday
Thanks to a high pressure system it is a cold one out there today. Not as chilly as in certain parts of New England but cold enough to make today the coldest day of the new year. The high pressure system, and cold air, is going to slowly creep northward today ahead of a storm system that's brewing off Carolinas. The slow movement of the high and the approach of warmer air from the south means today's max temperature in the mid 20s won't be reached until midnight.
Storm Possible Wednesday
A cold high pressure system continues to dominate the weather today. Much like yesterday the city will see a mix of sun and clouds, but mostly sun. It remains cool with a high only in the upper 20s.
Two Storms Beat as One
A complicated pair of weather disturbances are bringing a wintry mix to New York today. This morning a short wave trough, think of this as a kink in the jet stream, has brought instability to the atmosphere, which has caused the early morning snow to fall. The short wave will give way later today to a developing coastal storm, which will bring more snow and probably freezing rain and sleet. As a result the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, which is in effect until late tonight.
Dodging the Freezing Rain Bullet
It looks like we will miss the freezing rain today as the cold air hasn't quite gotten here. A winter weather advisory is in effect for those portions of upstate New York and western New England that are getting the freezing rain. The freezing rain upstate, and the drizzly foggy conditions here, are associated with an elongated frontal system that stretches from the east coast back to Texas. That system, which is being blamed for...
American Ballet Theater Dancer Killed in Weekend
Highway Crash
Icy conditions on Sunday caused a number of accidents, most notably a 15-car pile-up on Route 3/Meadowland Parkway in New Jersey. A dump truck had jumped a divider, and then cars, unable to avoid it, piled up behind it. There were over 28 injuries and two people died. It was announced that one of the victims was Jennifer Alexander (pictured), a veteran of the American Ballet Theater. Her husband Julio Bragado-Young, another ABT dancer, was...
