Recently photographer Nate Kensinger headed to the "desolate industrial wasteland" that is Newtown Creek. Last year it was declared a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, who called it "one of the nation’s most polluted waterways." So we were wondering: does a watery toxic wasteland like this freeze in the winter? The above photo holds the answer: not really! Fine, maybe it's thawed... but we're told Prospect Park Lake is still mostly frozen.
Can The Toxic Newtown Creek Freeze?
Winter Arrives
Winter is here! Over the weekend the temperature fell to the freezing mark and it won't escape the 30s for most of the week ahead. Check out this chart we made of when freezing temperatures hit Central park over the years.
Feds Want to Freeze Ruth Madoff's Money
With her multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheming-husband behind bars, Ruth Madoff is now the focus of the federal investigators. An SEC source tells the NY Post, "The US attorneys will be in court in the next week or so to tell a judge that they believe Mrs. Madoff's assets are derived from ill-gotten gains and that they should be frozen for a certain period of time while the investigation is ongoing... You just need to be able to convince the judge that there is a strong probability that the funds in question came from crime." Bernard Madoff is worth around $823 million, and that $92 million, such as multi-million dollar real estate, is in his wife's name (the "financier" had asked that Ruth keep "her" assets). Ruth Madoff reportedly agreed to freeze her assets earlier but that verbal agreement was non-binding.
F and S Words Return to Forecast
There's enough weather on tap this week for us to hold on to our hats, both literally and figuratively. An Alberta Clipper will pass south of the city today, transforming into a coastal storm overnight before returning tomorrow. Arctic air will quickly follow the coastal storm and another Alberta Clipper is expected to zip through the area on Thursday.
