Just when you thought the Union Pool drama was lost in the archives...today we received an email that was forwarded on to us by a reader. It was a public email from Union Pool to, apparently, their mailing list. We were not included on the email, and when we asked for a statement earlier this week - after emailing with one of the managers there - we weren't given one. Instead we were asked to apologize and were told "we are a bar that supports our community and in turn it should support us." Eep! An off-duty police officer was stabbed in the chest by another person at Kellogg's Diner in Williamsburg around 4:30AM yesterday with a folding knife. And what started this confrontation? According to the NY Times, when "one person bumped into someone from the other party on his way to the bathroom." Has Crime Come Back to Williamsburg?

An informal poll of 50 residents and business owners has the NY Post claiming that "petty thieves and drug users [are tying] to reclaim the streets after more than a decade of plummeting crime rates." After welcoming the gentrification, it seems like people are experiencing more muggings, house break-ins, violent assaults, and crack vials on the sidewalks than they would expect, given the quickly gentrifying neighborhood. One woman tells the Post, "I've seen it clean up and get better, but now crime is going back up. I was mugged last year right in front of my building, and a week later, my friend was mugged. It's scary." But the problem may lie in the gentrification, since people are feeling more secure and therefore may not be as careful in locking up and watching out. Police also say that more people need to report crimes, in order for them to catch the criminals. more ›
