Free Häagen-Dazs today, you guys. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at participating locations, the gourmet ice cream will be giving out free scoops of your choosing. Here's a list of the locations for your perusal, and some fun facts to break the ice with your neighbor while you're waiting on line: Did you know Häagen-Dazs was established by Polish immigrants Reuben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx, New York, in 1961? Their first retail outlet was in Brooklyn, and the brand name is contrived of two made-up words meant to look Scandinavian to American eyes!

Alert: Tomorrow Is Free Cone Day
It's that special time of year again, where you can wait in absurdly long lines in an effort to save a few bucks. Ben & Jerry's will be hosting another Free Cone Day tomorrow, and you can get your free frozen treat from noon to 8 p.m. We called the Rockefeller Center shop today and they told us the cone you'd be getting is normally "$3.25 plus tax," but other locations "may be cheaper." If you hit up several shops throughout the day, you can double... triple... quadruple these savings!
Queue Up Now for Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day
If an hour of your time is worth less than the cost of an ice cream cone, today's your day to shine! Ben & Jerry's is holding their annual birthday celebration and giving out free single scoop ice cream cones to all Americans. Any flavor! The handouts last from noon to 8 p.m., and you can find your nearest location here. However, if you're serious about this, it's worth calling ahead because not all shops participate every year; in 2006 the miserly Ben & Jerry's at 154 Bleecker Street (now closed?) backed out of the tradition "due to construction."

The Fat of the Land
It looks to be a good week for poverty-stricken ice cream afficianados. Today is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops. Baskin-Robbins is responding with Free Scoop Night tomorrow evening from 6 to 10 PM. Having done the Ben & Jerry's thing before, I can tell you that you're likely to burn off all those calories waiting impatiently in line for your free grub. However, between those of us here at Gothamist who eat no fat, those who eat no lean and those who claim to be lactose intolerant, this is probably one event we're skipping.
