An 18-year-old girl with a criminal record has been arrested for the brutal face slashing of Shantayah Lewis in Crown Heights last Friday. Carina Bernard allegedly attacked Lewis on Franklin Avenue, cutting the 17-year-old's face with a knife and stabbing her cousin, 15-year-old Shakeena Grant. A relative of both victims told the Daily News, "I'm happy they arrested her, so that she can pay for what she did."

Brooklyn Face Slashing Victim: "Violence is Not the Way"
"My face is too beautiful to be fighting," Shantayah Lewis told reporters from a bed in Kings County Hospital. "Fighting is not the key. Violence is not the way." On Friday the 17-year-old and her 15-year-old cousin were targeted by at least one aggressive assailant on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, reports the News. Lewis said she and Shakeena Grant were out near Lincoln Place around 3:30 p.m. when they noticed a girl they knew behind them. "She kept following us," the victim said, adding that the girl was dating the ex-boyfriend of another one of their cousins. "She wanted to fight."
Brooklyn Girl the Victim of Vicious Face Slicing
In Crown Heights two teen girls were pinned to the pavement and viciously attacked by a woman Friday afternoon. Around 5 p.m. 16-year-old Shantayah Lewis and her 15-year-old friend Shaquina Grant were out on Franklin Avenue enjoying the nice weather, when suddenly a car pulled up beside them. Out hopped a couple identified by witnesses as "Darnell" and "Corona," reports the News. "[They] get out and start fighting with them until Darnell holds these two little girls down and Corona just starts slicing my granddaughter's face up," said Cheryl Evans.
The Brooklyn Eagle's Website Gets Grisly
Currently the top story on the front page of The Brooklyn Eagle's website contains a graphic photo of a murdered man hanging out of a car. The headline reads: "Grisly Murder on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn", and we were sort of shocked to find an actual photo of the "grisly murder" right there below those words. The story simply reads:
The body of 22-year-old Jamal Oughterson (right) hangs out of the back seat a car on Grand Avenue near Atlantic Avenue early Saturday morning after being shot several blocks away. Police said Oughterson had agreed to meet a friend on Fulton Street near Franklin Avenue when a gunman fired at him. He was whisked away from the scene by a driver who evidently intended to take him to the hospital, but the car was intercepted by authorities. Oughterson died while en route. The officer at left was at the crime scene.Probably wouldn't have been their top story unless they had that "exclusive photo". What do you think, did they do the wrong thing by running this (there's a screenshot after the jump since eventually it won't be on the front page anymore)? We're sure family and friends of the victim would think so.
Touring the Brighton Line
This past Sunday, Gothamist went on a tour of the Brighton Line and Franklin Avenue Shuttle subway lines in Brooklyn. The tour, sponsored by the New York City Transit Museum, was lead by subway historian Joe Cunningham who gave an incredibly detailed history of the line, peppered with historical anecdotes, on the various tour stops on the line that started as a steam powered railroad to take holiday makers to the Brighton Beach Hotel during the Victorian era.
Shootings Across Brooklyn Leave 2 Dead, Many Injured

Franklin Avenue Shuttle Derailment
Yesterday afternoon, the Franklin Avenue shuttle derailed at Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard, knocking some passengers out of their seats. Riders escaped serious injury but had to be evacuated as authorities investigated the trains. One early hypothesis is that signal problems caused the derailment - damn those signals! The Franklin Avenue shuttle is only two cars long and is conductorless, leading the NYC Transit to try to reassure people by saying, "All these shuttles are conductorless. These trains are no less safe than any other."
